As the world continues to wait and wonder which movie he will choose for his follow-up to Lincoln, Steven Spielberg seems content to wander around attaching himself to as many projects as humanly possible. Late last week there were reports that he would produce and possibly direct religious drama The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, which would reteam him with Lincoln and Munich writer Tony Kushner. Now this week we are hearing that he is setting his sights on an untitled Cold War spy thriller with Tom Hanks instead. Throw in a potential West Side Story remake, period epic Montezuma, and the long-gestating Robopocalypse, and his next gig behind the camera is still anyone’s guess. But hey, spy movies are hot right now… and who wouldn’t want to see him work with Tom Hanks again?

According to Variety, Steven Spielberg is now attached to direct an untitled spy thriller for DreamWorks with Tom Hanks on board to star. The movie is a period piece based on the true story of James Donovan, “a prominent American attorney enlisted by the CIA during the Cold War to slip behind the iron curtain to negotiate the release of Gary Powers, a pilot captured when his U-2 spy plane was shot down over Russia.” The script was written by British playwright Matt Charman and was acquired in a bidding war last year.

It doesn’t seem likely that this will be Spielberg’s next movie, but if he doesn’t feel like taking on a big budget blockbuster, some people think it could be an option. At the moment, insiders are saying that the sci-fi thriller Robopocalypse is the project that is the farthest along and still his top choice to move forward with. The Film Stage has a nice breakdown of all of the projects he currently has on his plate. Which movie do you want to see Steven Spielberg direct next?
