Monday Morning Box Office Report: Cap Fends Off Rio 2

As expected, it was a close race at the box office this weekend, but Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier managed to hold on to the #1 spot for the second week in a row with $41.4 million. If Rio 2 had managed to improve on its predecessor by even just a little bit, it probably would have ended up in first, but the animated sequel had a nearly identical $39 million debut which was good enough for second place. Indie horror flick Oculus opened in third with a decent $12 million, while Draft Day starring Kevin Costner disappointed with $9.8 million. Divergent rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, The Raid 2 had a poor showing after expanding nationwide, earning $1.01 million on 954 screens and finishing just out of the top 10.
