Baz Luhrmann in Talks to Direct Kung Fu

Okay, this is a pretty weird one. Over the past few years we’ve been hearing that Legendary Pictures is in the process of setting up a big screen adaptation of the cult classic ’70s TV series Kung Fu. The original show starred David Carradine as Kwai Chang Caine, a Shaolin monk who travels to America in search of his half-brother. Along the way he must rely on his spiritual training and martial arts skills to help him. Last we heard, Bill Paxton was potentially on board to direct, which in itself was a bit surprising. Now a few years later, it appears that he is no longer involved. Instead, they have turned to another unexpected choice to take over the reins. Would you believe… Baz Luhrmann, director of such films as Moulin Rouge and The Great Gatsby?

According to THR, Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is currently in talks to direct Kung Fu for Legendary Pictures. It is unclear how close he is to signing on, but he would potentially be doing a rewrite on the script as well. The previous draft was written by Rich Wilkes, who wrote the Vin Diesel flick xXx and Marvel’s upcoming Iron Fist series.

Up until now, Baz Luhrmann has been known for his lavish romances and extravagant period pieces, so this would be something a bit different for him. His 2008 film Australia was a western of sorts, although this Kung Fu movie will not take place in the American West, instead sending Caine off in search of his father in China. Luhrmann is still expected to “bring his own signature sensibility” to the project, whatever that entails. What do you think, could Baz Luhrmann direct a kick-ass Kung Fu movie or are they thinking too far outside the box on this one?

Kung Fu was one of my favorites as a kid in the 70s. I hope the film is good, but the original series carried the sentiments of the pacifist 60s, which is passe in today’s hyper-violent media.
