Mike Cahill and Brit Marling made a big splash at Sundance a couple of years ago with their indie sci-fi drama Another Earth. This year they returned to the festival with their follow-up, I Origins, another film that uses a far out scientific discovery to explore various elements of life and love. That could be interesting except that it seems to involve the intersection of science and spirituality, which automatically sets off alarm bells for me.
Michael Pitt plays a PhD student studying the evolution of the eye, who falls in love with a supermodel after a chance encounter at a party. Years later, he and his lab partner make a profound discovery about the human eye that “may fundamentally change society as we know it.” Some of the imagery looks pretty, but the tone of the movie seems awfully self-important. I Origins hits select theatres on July 18th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
