Monday Morning Box Office Report: Captain America: The Winter Soldier Sets New April Record

Disney and Marvel are showing absolutely no signs of losing their box office dominance as Captain America: The Winter Soldier soared to a massive $96 million opening weekend. That smashes the April box office record previously held by Fast Five, which made $86.2 million back in 2011. It’s also an incredible 48% increase over the last Captain America movie, which shows how much these Marvel movies have grown in popularity and how they have established themselves as must-see events regardless of when they are released. Elsewhere, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah fell to #2, followed by Divergent at #3. God’s Not Dead and The Grand Budapest Hotel rounded out the top 5. Without any major competition until May, we can probably expect Cap to stay on top of the box office throughout most of April.

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier — $96.2M
2. Noah — $17M
3. Divergent — $13M
4. God’s Not Dead — $7.7M
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel — $6.3M
6. Muppets Most Wanted — $6.3M
7. Mr. Peabody & Sherman — $5.3M
8. Sabotage — $1.9M
9. Need for Speed — $1.8M
10. Non-Stop — $1.8M

What’s interesting is that the most successful comic book movies the last few years like Iron Man, The Avengers, and Captain America a were NEVER very popular comic books.
