Jon Favreau’s Chef Trailer

chef

Ever since it was first announced, I’ve been very intrigued by the prospect of Jon Favreau returning to his indie roots with the upcoming film Chef. Early reviews coming out of SXSW seem to be very positive and the cast includes his former Iron Man / Iron Man 2 stars Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson along with John Leguizamo, Sofia Vergara, Dustin Hoffman and Bobby Cannavale. That being said, when you put aside the cast and Favreau’s own track record, the premise does feel a little bit thin. Is it enough for it to simply be a labour of love?

The story revolves around a big time chef at a Los Angeles restaurant who quits his job to preserve his artistic integrity and starts up a food truck with his family and friends. I can see how there is potential there for a poignant parallel with his own life, but based on the first trailer, it doesn’t look all that funny. The quotes praising it for being “food porn” also don’t mean much to me. That’s not to say I won’t give it the benefit of the doubt, but competing for attention within the early summer blockbusters is going to be tough. Chef hits theatres on May 9th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

None of the jokes worked for me, but I do like the premise.

Looks the Stephen Frear’s 1996 THE VAN but without the emotional core. Well played, Hollywood.

I don’t know why, but food trucks are very happening in Western New York. I’ve seen lines a quarter-block long – just for hot dogs and pizza!

Was this film partially financed by one of those brands?
