Luc Besson’s Lucy Trailer Starring Scarlett Johansson

With the rumours of a Black Widow solo movie continuing to build, Scarlett Johansson is also proving her chops as an action star outside of the Marvel Universe with Luc Besson’s latest film Lucy. It looks like a slightly different kind of superhero movie with a sci-fi twist as Johansson plays a woman named Lucy who is held captive and forced to deliver drugs for a Taiwanese gang. When she accidentally swallows the drug she is transporting, she finds herself starting to develop superhuman abilities.

The movie takes place in 2069 AD and it also stars Morgan Freeman as a scientist who is trying to figure out how to unlock the full potential of the human mind. It’s unclear what the extent of Lucy’s powers are, but it seems like it might go to some pretty far out places. Either way, it’s exciting to see Luc Besson return to the sci-fi action genre for the first time since The Fifth Element in 1997. Lucy hits select theatres on Aug. 8th; check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

  • Groan. I feel like I’ve seen this before. From Luc Besson even. Plus, yet another movie trotting out the ‘we only use 10% of our brain’ nonsense cliche: http://enwp.org/Ten_percent_of_brain_myth

La Femme Nikita? Check. Matrix? Check. Limitless? Check. Morgan Freeman’s reliable, calming (this is all real) voice, Check. I don’t mind the Luc Besson-isms in a lot of his (directed or produced) movies, but I hate when he tries to amplify the reality/believability of them. Part of the charm is the often funny, over-exaggerated dialog and action. I’m sure you could tie 5th Element into this pretty easily too.

So its Limitless with a chick….

  • LordAwesome

Luc Besson is so fucking lame.

  • Captain Fram

Was just rewatching 5th Element the other night. If this manages to shy away from the deadly-serious tone (that the trailer implies) and embraces 5th Element crazy times, I’m definitely on board.

Foomandoonian, you beat me to it. The movie actually looks cool to me, and I’ll watch it, but I’ll have a hard time getting past the fact that the main plot revolves around something we already know to be a myth.

  • My first thought, too!
And even if it was true, how would using “100 percent of your brain” allow you to defy the laws of physics?
If they are going for a serious tone they have to make it at least half believable.

I’m not a fan of The 5th Element or his other movies, with ONE frustrating exception: Léon aka The Professional. Frustrating because I want more of that goodness.

I love Besson not a huge fan of Scarlett…never liked her acting chops always felt like she was acting…never seems natural. But the premise though done before should be interesting in Besson’s hands so yeah I’m gonna check it out.
