Kevin Costner Wants to Direct a New Western Trilogy

With Draft Day hitting theatres in a couple of weeks, Kevin Costner is about to appear in his third major release in 2014 and the year isn’t even halfway through. It would seem that his acting comeback is essentially complete, which means it’s time to turn to the next obvious question: when will he take another stab at directing? His last film was Open Range back in 2003, and although it wasn’t necessarily a huge hit, it made back its budget and then some. Well, believe it or not, Costner now claims to be juggling a few possible directorial gigs, but the one he is most interested in is another Western. Actually, three Westerns to be exact. He wants to direct a trilogy and have them all released theatrically within a single year. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’ve got this Western that I think I could make. I actually have this idea to make them all at once and release one on Memorial Day, one on Thanksgiving, and then one on the Fourth of July, all within a 12 month span, because it’s all the same story but it truly is a journey, with a fourth movie coming right after. Will I be able to do that? I don’t know. But that’s what I think about, that’s what I try to do. And people go, ‘Oh that’s really interesting, Kevin. We don’t think we can do that.’ And I’m thinking ‘Man, that’s a really good idea.’ I thought that was a true ongoing series, or sequel if you will, that actually was an honest one. A second one wasn’t invented because the first one made a little money.”

Of course, while the idea sounds cool, I can see why he might have trouble getting that project funded. Studios like to stretch out their trilogies and franchises for a maximum return on investment. Even if the material had commercial potential, that release plan seems crazy. However, I’m surprised he isn’t considering doing something like that for TV, especially after the success of Hatfields & McCoys on The History Channel. In the same interview with Collider, he does mention another project he is developing for TV called The Explorers Guild. What do you think, would you like to see Kevin Costner get back behind the camera sometime soon? Does his ambitious Western trilogy sound like a slam dunk?

I like a good western more than most people but I don’t really have an opinion on this.. Maybe if he had dropped some info on what the movies would be about rather than his release plan..

I think this would be awesome! Open Range was really well done and this idea if he pulls it off could be epic! With so many other sequels or contiuation of movies being done, why not do it with the Western genre! I hope this project gets off the ground and running!
