Bradley Cooper to Maybe Possibly Replace Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones?

Back in December, we learned that Disney had followed up their Lucasfilm acquisition by fully acquiring the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise from Paramount. At the time, they made no mention of what they might be planning to do with that franchise, but it seemed unlikely that they would pay for the rights just to let them sit there. The problem, however, is that Harrison Ford is not getting any younger. We have to assume that at some point he will pass the torch to someone else, and based on the fan reaction to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it probably won’t be Shia LaBeouf. Now a new report is claiming that they will go the James Bond route with Indy, eventually allowing different actors to don the whip and fedora. Currently topping the list of possible replacements is none other than Bradley Cooper.

According to Latino Review, Disney is currently looking to do at least one more Indiana Jones movie with Harrison Ford, but if that doesn’t happen by a certain date, they will simply recast him with a younger actor and start a brand new trilogy. They are comparing it to the evolution of the James Bond franchise in the sense that it won’t be a reboot, but simply another actor taking on the role and continuing the adventure. Although they are looking at several possibilities, Bradley Cooper is said to be their top choice to play the new Indy.

While it might be hard to imagine anyone else playing Indiana Jones, the serialized nature of his adventures do lend themselves well to seeing different incarnations of the character. After all, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles had Sean Patrick Flanery in the lead role and River Phoenix also played a young Indy in The Last Crusade. Although I’m not crazy about Bradley Cooper, he does have a bit of a resemblance to Harrison Ford and he can handle comedy fairly well.

Either way, I think fans will at least appreciate the fact that this isn’t a reboot (unless they decide to make it one anyway, which might still happen). They are also reporting that Frank Darabont pitched an idea for the next film, which could be interesting. Would you watch an Indiana Jones movie with a different actor in the lead role? Is Bradley Cooper the right choice to take over the franchise?

Sure, why not? Throw in Fassbender as the villain.

I can see it. Hemsworth would have been the obvious choice imo, with his charisma but Cooper could be good.

  • Fine, do it. Let’s have a new Indy movie. Cooper’s fine in my book.

If they do go the James Bond route, then they should let every new actor do their own interpretation of the character. Otherwise, they will always be compared to Harrison Ford.

I thought Lucas should have done that years ago. Different actors playing the same character are pretty standard fare now…i.e. James Bond, Batman, Superman, Spiderman etc…so why not Indiana Jones?

I will always love Ford and he’ll remain the quintessential Jones in my book…but I would love to see Karl Urban or Nathan Fillon or how about Eric Bana? I would actually like to see what Hugh Jackman would do but he might be to old.

Like Cooper but he’s not who I imagined being in the role.

I take everything back: I want Lucas back!

He’s stupid as fuck. It even shines through his acting.

Indy’s charm was that he was a smart and a cynical MAN who moaned his way through his adventures. It was believable cause Ford kinda is like that himself.

Cooper is only being chosen because of his looks. And based on his not-so-well acting, and how he is IRL, this will never work. He is a bit hy pretty boy. Not a man. Not Indy.

Someone mentioned Fassbender as possible. He would inn fact fit better than Cooper ås Indy. Even Christian Bale would fit better.

  • Lisa

Hemsworth = pretty boy. Just like Cooper.

  • Lori Cerny

Was River Phoenix a credible young Indy? I’m sure the casting director will find someone who is sorta-similar to Ford, just as long as they are a good actor.

I do think Ford has one more Indy in him, though. As a great man once said, “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage.”

Maybe Possibly? And I thought my English was bad…

  • Sean

It was supposed to maybe possibly be kinda sorta funny…

So they went with the first guy with a five o’clock shadow and brown hair they could think of? Not unlikeable, but zero charisma and not badass enough.

He’s got a bit more to him than that I would say. Having given it some more thought though, I think Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame would be good. I could see him be all “it belongs in a MUSEUM!!”

Fillion would of course nail it but that’ll never happen.
