Monday Morning Box Office Report: Divergent Destroys Muppets Most Wanted

It would seem that Summit Entertainment are the only ones who know how to properly market and launch a successful YA franchise as their latest entry Divergent opened strong with $56 million, ending a streak of flops from other studios including The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Beautiful Creatures and The Host. That’s way less than The Hunger Games made and considerably less than the original Twilight as well, but it’s more than enough to justify them fast-tracking the sequel, Insurgent. Meanwhile, Muppets Most Wanted went limp out of the gate with just $16.5 million, about half of what The Muppets made back in 2011. It definitely looks like the franchise is headed back into obscurity. Elsewhere, Mr. Peabody & Sherman fell to #3 followed by 300: Rise of an Empire, while Christian film God’s Not Dead surprised by opening in fifth place. That should set the stage nicely for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah to debut next weekend, after opening to big numbers in Mexico and South Korea this weekend.

Muppets had Peabody’s solid word of mouth to contend with. I like the movie almost as much as the last one, but they did a really poor job with their trailers and the overall campaign. The last one made itself an event. This one did not.
