Jem and the Holograms Movie in the Works

Oh, how I thought this day would never come. After years of seeing various ’80s cartoons and toys getting optioned for the big screen, someone has finally decided to make the live action movie we’ve all been waiting for: Jem and the Holograms! For those who don’t remember this toy line, it was essentially Hasbro’s attempt to win over girls, who would clearly never be interested in manly stuff like G.I. Joe and Transformers. The premise revolves around Jerrica Benton, the owner and manager of Starlight Music, who uses a holographic computer and remote control earrings bequeathed to her by her dead father to transform into her alter-ego, a rock musician named Jem. She fronts a band called The Holograms, who are constantly being by hounded by their rival band, The Misfits. Now we’re about to get a big screen adaptation courtesy of Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and director Jon M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation).

According to THR, Jon M. Chu will direct a Jem and the Holograms movie, based on the 1980s Hasbro toy line and animated series. Jason Blum will produce through Blumhouse Productions, along with Scooter Braun (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never). The script is being written by Ryan Landels (The LXD: The Legion of Extraordinary Dancers) and the plot is described as follows:

“[The story] centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt — one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.”

Chu, Blum and Braun announced the project via YouTube today, where they put the call out to fans to help with music, costume design and casting. Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen! In all seriousness though, I think this movie could be a lot of fun if they go completely over the top with it and embrace the camp. Another interesting comparison could be the live-action Josie and the Pussycats movie that was released in 2001. Either way, I think we can all agree that it’s about time women had an ’80s cartoon adaptation of their own to get excited about. Are you stoked for a Jem and the Holograms movie?
