Rob Zombie and Bret Easton Ellis to Team Up for Manson Murders TV Mini-Series

It’s been a couple of years since we’ve heard about any potential new film projects in development from Rob Zombie. His most recent film, The Lords of Salem, had a small theatrical release last year, but at the time it seemed that he had quite a few other movies on his plate including The Devil’s Rejects 2, a remake of The Blob, a Broad Street Bullies movie and a mysterious project called Tyrannosaurus Rex. At this point, however, none of these movies seem to be any closer to getting made. Instead, Rob Zombie is now turning his attention to television where he will team up with American Psycho writer Bret Easton Ellis for a mini-series about the Manson Family murders. Zombie had this to say:

“I have been obsessed with this insane story since I was a kid, so obviously I jumped at the chance to be involved in this incredible project. After speaking with Bret, I immediately realized that we shared the same vision for this epic madness.”

Bret Easton Ellis is on board to write the script while Zombie will direct. The project is being produced by Alcon Television and is set up at Fox as a limited series although it is still reportedly far away from getting greenlit. Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger (Prisoners) are also on board as executive producers.

Their plan is to draw from the historical record as opposed to any specific source material as they “tell converging stories of people and events leading up to and after the murders, from shifting points of view.” Manson’s story has been told on screen a number of times previously, most notably in a pair of made-for-TV movies based on Vincent Bugliosi’s Helter Skelter, released in 1976 and 2004 respectively. Still, this sounds like an intriguing collaboration and I look forward to seeing how it turns out. Are you interested in this project or are you disappointed that Zombie’s other movies now seem to be on the back burner?

Sounds interesting, my only concern is that Zombie will exploit the more horrendous aspects of the murders. Sticking the camera in for ultra-sweaty close-ups of grinning hippies as they knife a pregnant woman for shock value is all the more reprehensible being that these incidents actually happened. I don’t see what his motives are here yet….
