New Matrix Trilogy in the Works?

newmatrixtrilogy

It’s been over a decade now since Andy and Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix trilogy came to a close, and although most people agree that The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were huge disappointments, the former remains the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time. With Hollywood studios relying so heavily on established brands and franchises these days, it’s not crazy to think that eventually Warner Brothers would want to take us back down the rabbit hole. That being said, up until now the question has always been whether The Wachowskis would consider it. Generally they have seemed uninterested in revisiting the franchise, but after a few non-Matrix commercial failures, could they be warming up to the idea? A new report indicates that it is closer to happening than you might think. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Latino Review, The Wachowskis are currently in the process of writing a treatment and outlines for a whole new trilogy set in The Matrix universe. It’s unclear if these would be prequels or sequels, but supposedly the animated shorts are not necessarily considered canon. No word yet on whether or not The Wachowskis would direct any of these movies themselves, but now that they are back in the swing of things with Cloud Atlas and Jupiter Ascending, it seems like a distinct possibility.

Now keep in mind this is still nothing more than a rumour and the folks at Latino Review are quick to predict a denial from Warner Brothers. We’ve also heard rumours about new Matrix movies before that have proven to be false. Still, it does feel like perhaps the time is right to revisit The Matrix franchise, and the higher-ups at Warner Brothers are supposedly desperate for tentpoles to go up against the new Star Wars and Avatar films in 2017. What do you think, are you ready to take the red pill all over again?

I’m game I guess but I’d rather have a new Matrix game.. That’s been a huge missed opportunity.

Bring back Keanu Reeves and make it an Inception situation. A Matrix within a Matrix. And bring back fat Morpheus.

I like this, if they are going to bring the series back they better have some kind of twist that’s as much of a mindfuck as watching the first matrix for the first time.

Its Dejavu its what it is,the Matrix made trouble for Episode 1 back in 1999,is the past about to repeat itself in the future?(2017?)…do we really need a new Matrix Trilogy??…does anyone really want this?…hmm….Matrix was all hype back in the day….and they faded pretty fast…

I disagree as I do want THIS.

The concept of The Matrix is pretty darn awesome and there is so much potential for story-telling and new characters. Hopefully, the new films will fix the ending of Matrix Revolutions which was a huge disappointment, for me.

yes,i agree, the Matrix has alot going for it..i can see that..
But there are 3 themes rolled in to one..Noir,Kung-fu,Anime..
The 1 one was pretty cool and inovativ…but be carefull with the Kung Fu stuff…it can seem silly if done wrong..and matrix was at the edge sometimes with funky monkey stuff…sunglasses, trenchcoat, slow mo,bullet time….the 1 one was a suprise..riffing on bruce lee, noir and manga..it worked…2 and 3?…cgi party?!…if they bring it back it has to be low key poow!….and remember kung fu hasent been that successful at the movies as you think….bruce lee started it and it will not end with Neo(Keanu)…we live in the Avatar age now…The Man of steel Age…we have the Raid now…we have Ong Bak…what can neo Bring to the table that these guys cant?…and be honest…it wasent that kick ass??…and the best part about The Matrix was Mr.smith…HELLO MR ANDERSON:)
Bullet time vs Duel of the fates?..anyone?….

  • The real question is, will we get a new “Philosophy of The Matrix” book?

Those films are still relevant. There is a whole generation of kids who are now catching onto The Matrix jut as the kids of the early 90s latched onto Star Wars,
