Minecraft Movie in the Works at Warner Brothers

The success of The Lego Movie is continuing to send tremors through Hollywood this week as another arguably similar property has just been snapped up by Warner Brothers. This time, instead of making a movie about physically interconnected bricks, the building blocks will be virtual instead. That’s right, the wildly popular video game Minecraft is about to be turned into a major movie franchise. It was probably only a matter of time given that the game just surpassed 100 million registered users and is now available on a variety of platforms including PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, iOS and Android. Heck, they even put out some Minecraft Lego sets. But here’s the surprising thing: Warner Brothers are looking to turn this into a live-action movie as opposed to an animated one. Huh?
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers has acquired the big screen rights to Minecraft from Swedish developer Mojang AB. Roy Lee (The Lego Movie) will produce along with Jill Messick (Mean Girls). No writer or director has been chosen for the project as of yet, but I’m guessing that almost everyone in Hollywood will be falling over each other to pitch their ideas.
For the uninitiated, the game involves mining for resources in order to build anything you want on a virtually limitless canvas. The only real objective is to take shelter from monsters that come out at night (if you choose to play Survival Mode, that is). Clearly this is another property without any built-in storyline or characters, leaving it completely up to the writers to find an interesting angle that will make it work as a movie. Still, based on the user base alone, this definitely has the potential to be the most successful video game movie ever made. Do you have any interest in a Minecraft movie?
