The Lego Movie 2 Gets Writers and a Release Date

With three straight weeks at the top of the box office, it should come as no surprise that The Lego Movie is making Hollywood execs stand up and take notice. We’re about to see a lot more movies based on toys (not unlike the Monster Trucks movie in development at Paramount), but in addition to that, Warner Brothers is already developing a sequel to The Lego Movie as well as a feature film based on the Lego Ninjago toy line. Last week they actually set a release date for The Lego Movie 2 (not the official title), planning it for three years from now. It seems safe to assume that most of the voice cast will return, but here is the bigger question: will Phil Lord and Chris Miller be back to direct?
According to Variety, Warner Brothers has scheduled the untitled sequel to The Lego Movie for May 26th, 2017. They have also hired screenwriters Jared Stern (Mr. Popper’s Penguins, The Internship) and Michelle Morgan (Girl Most Likely) to pen the script. Sadly, there is no mention of Phil Lord and Chris Miller being involved as of yet.
It’s worth noting that Lord and Miller wrote the screenplay for The Lego Movie with story credits going to Dan and Kevin Hageman (who are now doing the Ninjago screenplay). You might assume that if they were going to direct, they would also be writing it themselves, but then again they didn’t write 21 Jump Street or 22 Jump Street. Either way, it seems like this will require a deft touch if Warner Brothers hopes to put out a sequel that matches the original in terms of quality and wit. Are you looking forward to more Lego-related movies? Do you think anyone can repeat the success of The Lego Movie?
