Uncharted Movie Gets The King of Kong Director

Out of all the video games that are currently in the process of being turned into Hollywood blockbusters right now, you’d think that Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune would be one of the easiest to translate to the big screen. After all, the Uncharted franchise is quite obviously inspired by the Indiana Jones series and the games feature some of the strongest characters and storytelling that games have to offer. And yet, the project has been mired in quicksand over the past few years, unable to nail down a director who can make the movie a reality. After losing its latest director back in 2012, we hadn’t heard anything in over a year. Now this week Sony has finally named a new director for the Uncharted movie: Seth Gordon, the man who brought us the acclaimed arcade game documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

According to Deadline, Seth Gordon is currently in negotiations with Sony Pictures Entertainment to direct Uncharted, the feature film based on the best-selling video games series developed by Naughty Dog. Previous filmmakers who were once attached to helm the adaptation include David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle) and Neil Burger (Limitless). The latest draft of the screenplay was written by David Guggenheim (Safe House).

While The King of Kong connection obviously gives him some cred among gamers, I’m not sure that any of Gordon’s previous work really makes him an obvious choice to direct this movie. He has worked pretty much exclusively on comedies over the past few years, including Four Christmases, Horrible Bosses and Identity Thief. Perhaps this is an indication that Sony wants Uncharted to be funny, because there were also rumours that Naughty Dog approached Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to write the script at one point. Either way, Seth Gordon is no David O. Russell, that’s for sure. What do you think, is there still potential here for a great Uncharted movie?
