Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill to Star in American Nightmare

With the Winter Olympics in Sochi just a few days away, 20th Century Fox is reportedly in the process of setting up a movie that takes place during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. The story has little to do with sports, however. Tentatively titled American Nightmare, the movie will instead focus on Richard Jewell, the security guard who was initially hailed as a hero for discovering a backpack filled with pipe bombs, only to be named as a potential suspect three days later. The project will reunite Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, the unlikely duo who just starred in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street together. In this case, it is Jonah Hill who will take on the lead role as he is attached to play Jewell while DiCaprio will play his lawyer, Watson Bryant, a Southern attorney who had previously mainly handled real estate closings.
According to Deadline, Fox has acquired the rights to a Vanity Fair article by Marie Brenner entitled “American Nightmare: The Ballad Of Richard Jewell” with the intention of turning it into a starring vehicle for Jonah Hill. The article traces the sequence of events that led to Jewell being falsely accused of involvement in the terror bombing and highlights the dangers of irresponsible news reporting. In addition to co-starring, Leonardo DiCaprio is also producing through his Appian Way banner.
This looks to be the latest project in Jonah Hill’s continuing transition from foul-mouthed comedies to serious dramas. He is also attached to star in another drama with James Franco called True Story, which has a similar plot. He will play journalist Michael Finkel, who had his identity stolen by serial killer Christian Longo, which almost ruined his career. Are you looking forward to American Nightmare? How do you feel about the continuation of Jonah Hill’s surprising career trajectory?
