To re-iterate my own stance, I would agree that a fictional movie based on true events is not necessarily a remake of any given documentary about those true events. But as I pointed out below, there are cases where the source material for the fictional film (ie. what it is “based on” in the credits) is either the same as the documentary or the actual documentary itself.

Since Man on Wire and the Robert Zemeckis film are both based on Philippe Petit’s book, not just a general retelling of what happened, I don’t think it’s crazy to call it a remake. But I can definitely see why they wouldn’t want to promote it that way.

I may have said this, but I will qualify the statement by pointing out that Werner Herzog directed BOTH films. I use the term remake because he made the previous one and went on to make the new one. Otherwise, it would be two storytellers coming at the same content from different angles. Forget documentaries for a moment and ask yourself this: is David Fincher’s 2007 film “Zodiac” a REMAKE of Alexander Bulkly’s 2005 film “The Zodiac” (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371739/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2) simply because they are both based on the same true events?

I’ll come to Sean’s aid on the term remake here with my uncanny memory skills. Couple months ago Jay watched Little Dieter Needs to Fly and he said in his introduction to the film that this was the documentary that “Herzog essentially remade with Rescue Dawn” I may be paraphrasing a tad, but I specifically recall his use of the word remake.

Regarding having to wait for a new Stephen King movie for a premium, how about stretching a bit and tying it in with Alexandre AJa’s Horns, whenever it comes out. Based on the novel by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. It also coincidentally stars Daniel Potter, bringing it back around to this month’s premium.
