I agree with most of your points. The movie relied a lot on people's natural fear of loud noises to get most of the scares. (This was also to prevent people from falling asleep during the movie ;) )

We had about 300 voters in this poll.

Categories like Best Foreign Film and Best Documentary definitely had a high number of people not voting for anything.

Votes for Best and Worst film were open-ended, so we had no control over what was cast. Now You See Me did receive a few votes if I remember correctly.

Sean, since precision already came up - what are the numbers behind this, overall, how many people voted in the poll?

I voted but the maximum of films I have seen was 5 out of 6 in two categories. I guess that would be similar for most others - which fudges the numbers a bit...

(and where is Now You See Me in the worst film? - should get an honourable mention for worst film...)

All I'm trying to say is that Man of Steel as the worst movie of the year seems ridiculous to me, and I firmly believe the movie got such a distinction thanks (in part of course) to Marvel's success. Now that a precedent has been set, some people see it as a sort of "original" thing and they're not willing to give anything else a chance, especially WB/DC.

I know there are people out there who genuinely don't like the movie or aren't interested in future projects because of previous failures (although Green Lantern was the only movie that came before MoS that was intended to be part of this new DC film universe; so not that many failures). I just have a problem with those that don't give it a fair chance and are more than happy to bash it to death.

I liked Man of Steel a lot, but I don't blindly love it and I know it's not perfect (Michael Shannon was disappointing for me too, and Amy Adams' character Lois Lane as well). But I got what I wanted from it and I'd say there's enough in there to make someone love it. Things look promising from here on if you ask me and I'm just irritated when I see so much meaningless hate aimed at this huge project, hate that might discourage people from seeing upcoming (MoS/DC) movies. Again, for me there's a difference between not liking a movie for solid reasons and bashing the brains out of it for no good reasons at all. That's my problem, nothing more.

I also thought Now You See Me was awful.

I really didn't like Man of Steel, but wouldn't say it's the worst. I went into it being a Superman hater, I have never liked the comics and the only movie that I can say is decent is the 1st Reeves film. The character is boring to me, but that's just my opinion. I liked some aspects of the film, like when he wasn't Superman, after that the film turned to shit for me. And Michael Shannon was not good IMO.

I understand what your saying about the DC films not getting a chance, but I think that's because of WB failing in every venture not directed by Christopher Nolan. Also the fact that they were a few years late to the game and now their failed attempts are even more obvious and seem poorly put together. I wanted to like Man of Steel, but was let down once again by DC and WB. I just wanted it to end for the last 45 minutes.

Hangover 3, InAPPropriate Comedy, 21 & Over, I personally hated Dead Man Down. I would say that the worst of the worst was easily Now You See Me though, that was an abortion.

Man of Steel was not good, but movies like Admission, Identity Thief, Gangster Squad were all worse. Then again, we knew they would be bad.

The World's End wasn't a bad movie, but best comedy? Not even close. It got the votes because people like the movie and it wasn't in any other category that would give it a chance to win something.

Best comedy for me = most laughs, which would probably be Bad Grandpa.

Man of Steel is far from the worst movie of the year, frankly the first half was quite enjoyable. After actually watching Hangover 3, no one can honestly say Man of Steel was worse than that.

Also, Worlds end being best comedy? I admit it was a really weak year for comedies, but that was the first comedy I have actually fallen asleep during in about 4 years! I really do like Pegg comedies, but much like Apatow, they tend to be too long. Worlds end was OK, but it was WAY to depressing, and I actually thought this is the end was much funnier. I actually didn't "laugh" much at all during Worlds end. Which is really how comedies should be rated. In fact, I laughed at "We're the Millers" at least 4 times as much as the two "end" movies combined.
