2013 Film Junk Reader’s Choice Award Winners

2013readerschoicewinners

It’s going to be a few more days before we get around to recording our year end podcast and revealing our own favourite films of 2013, but in the meantime I thought we should take a look at the best movies of the year according to Film Junk’s many discerning readers and listeners. Although we narrowed down the options for you in most of the various categories, it’s worth noting that the votes for best and worst movie of the year were completely open-ended. Perhaps the biggest surprise this year was a two-way tie for Best Action Movie, but many of the other categories were not as close as I expected them to be. Whether or not you think it was a bad year for cinema, I guess this partially proves that there wasn’t a lot of depth to this year’s crop of movies. What do you think about this year’s winners? Are you in sync with your fellow Film Junkies? Check out the final results after the jump.

  • Jr

Totally nailed best and worst of the year. Go Film Junk!

  • Guest

Worst movie Man of Steel? Ridiculous. Lone Ranger fits this title way better. What a long and botring piece of crep, holy testicles.

  • RockJoker

Worst movie Man of Steel? Ridiculous. Lone Ranger fits this title way
better. What a long and boring piece of crap, holy testicles.

  • RockJoker

Only God Forgives is underrated, but that type of movie should be this way, because if everyone will like it, that would mean that director failed.

  • RockJoker

    Hunt was amazing. Fair win.

  • Sam

It’s funny that Man of Steel was voted Worst of the Year while also only being 8% away from winning Best Comic Book Movie of the Year.

It’s nowhere near worst movie of the year, but neither is Lone Ranger.

  • RockJoker

I agree. But i just hated Lone Ranger for how extremly boring it was. Having in mind that this film was shot on insane budget and had great ambitions, making this film just the worst for me. When i sat to watch Movie 43 i already knew, that this is not going to be the greatest thing.

  • Falsk

Man of Steel the worst? Did no one else suffer through RIPD or Hangover 3 this summer?

  • Sam

It’s an easy target. It’s one of the biggest movies of the year that was, to most, a disappointment, which people like to translate to “worst”.

I didn’t see any of the other nominees since they are typically movies I stay away from.

The worst I saw were probably stuff like How I Live Now, The Family, The Frozen Ground, or Now You See Me. But neither of those, except for maybe Now You See Me were probably not popular enough for something like this which is understandable.

  • Anthony

I didn’t like Man of Steel much either, but ouch.

  • Corey Watts

Man Of Steel worst? Laughable. They must not have seen Only God Forgives.

  • kyri

I voted for Lone Ranger without even seeing it just to annoy Frankie.. but, admittedly Man of Steel is the worst piece of garbage I’ve seen in many years…..

  • Boris the Blade

You are laughable. Man of Steel was terrible.

  • Boris the Blade

Both of them were far better than Man of Shit.

  • Corey Watts

Anybody that thinks RIPD was better than anything needs his head examined.

  • Tommy

    love the header image

  • disqus_NbQjiZq9RU

I didn’t subject myself to many films I knew I wouldn’t like this year, so Man of Steel was definitely one of the worst, most disappointing films I saw. Likewise, The Hunt was a film I had high hopes for and was left disappointed. Captain Phillips and The Act Of Killing are my top two films of the year though, so glad to see they won their categories.

  • Frankie Knuckles

Sean, was The Lone Ranger given the benefit of rounding for best action, or would it have won with more precision.?

  • Sean

Nope, it was a tie right down to the last vote.

  • Frankie Knuckles

    I SHOULD HAVE VOTED AGAIN!!!!

  • Stinker

The lone ranger seems to have a slow comeback, maybe there was too much bad press, and this is not limited to canda.. So Frankie knuckles is not alone in the world… hope you guys stay warm, it looks really cold in canda, from the 13 C Celsisus Oldenburg.

  • Boris the Blade

Anybody who thought Man of Steel was anything but BAD, or that Zack Snyder has any form of talent, is an idiot.

  • patrik

Alpha Papa is clearly the best comedy and Man of Steel, although not great by any means is certainly not the worst movie of the year either.

  • jarny

i think im gonna pop in man of steel tonight because it was great! worst of the year? GTFOH!!!!

  • Boris the Blade

No, man. It just was bad. And that’s coming from a guy who loves art.

It’s plot/message is simplistic and flat out bad. It’s not a terrible film, as the visuals are nice. But that’s about it. Good visuals. The rest is…meeeeh.

  • Isildur_of_Numenor

Man of Steel as the worst is way off the mark… but what can you do? It’s the most popular out of the top 5 worst and it’s a pretty divisive film. Also, DC and Man of Steel get a lot of undeserved hate, most likely from Marvel fans. It’s sad but it’s true. Why can’t we have both comic book universes coexisting as film franchises? Do we really have to pick sides? Sheesh…

  • noiwillnotpickaname

I agree, and I’m a guy that likes food.

  • merk

Man of Steel may not be the worst, but it was the most disappointing movie I saw this year. Of course that’s true of everything Snyder has ever made. The hype, the trailers get all excited and then he completely fails to deliver. I didn’t vote, but mostly agree with these results.

  • RockJoker

Maybe you just don’t understand this movie? This movie is not regular art movie by any means. Refn put in it a lot of his own fetishes and passion. If you don’t like this movie, i’m ok with that. Personally, it’s my favourite film of the year. This film is amazing as in style, as in substance. You really need to love language of silence to love this movie, i guess.

  • RockJoker

Maybe we should not get into extremes here.

  • Ripplesdip

So if these results are to be believed then Thor, Wolverine and Kick Ass should be derided as absolute shit. I remember people not liking them but never the reaction that so many seem to have re Man of Steel on this thread. So what’s the deal?

  • Boris the Blade

This is your illusion. There are no Marvel-fans in those votes (Thor and Wolverine didn’t excactly get good votes either). They voted on it cause it sucks ass.

  • Isildur_of_Numenor

It’s not an illusion, it’s a fact. Are you seriously saying Man of Steel is the worst movie of the year? I can understand someone not liking it but the worst of the year? No way. Compared to other movies that came this year, it’s an amazing movie. That’s not to say people can’t say Man of Steel is the worst, it’s all subjective and everyone is entitled to his opinion. I’m just questioning the honesty behind these opinions.

  • Boris the Blade

Yes, of course it deserves that spot, considering the budget it had, and how it treats itself as a movie — and the fact that it was my worst movie experience of 2013 (and I went in with zero expectations). And there is nothing positive about it. It’s simply put a terrible film. Not just of this year, but any time. It’s made by a director who has no talent and written by a writer who is even worse. Snyder, with the last 30 minutes of the film, which contains pure action void of any sort of content (the only “content” being the product placements of IHOP, 7-eleven, and U-Haul — which just made it offensive to watch), acknowledges his level of artistic potential: zero.

And forgive me for having a bigger view of the world than just superhero movies, like a lot of people have. Superhero movies are generally bad, but Man of Steel is in a category of its own. I would probably put it alongside Green Lantern. Because compared to films like Wolverine or Iron Man 3, it really is a shitty film. And if you compare it with this year’s best films, Prisoners, The Place Beyond the Pines, The Wolf of Wall Street and Upstream Color, you really start to understand how terrible of a film it is.

Man of Steel is Snyder and Goyer trying to be Nolan, and failing to understand that still are the bad filmmakers they have always been: Snyder can only creare very small visual moments and good trailers, and that’s about it. And Goyer can… well he can’t do shit, to be honest!

  • Boris the Blade

Oh, I understood it very well. The theme of the film is very explicitly explained in the title, and in the decapitation of hands — the “tool” of men.

  • Matt the Kiwi

Just watched Lone Ranger for the first time tonight and whaddaya know, Knuckles was right – it’s great! Too late to cast my vote for best action film to break the tie? And the Blu-ray gets my vote for best gag reel of the year too.

  • Isildur_of_Numenor

The Dark Knight was before the Marvel craze, before The Avengers. Now that DC wants to make a Justice League movie, there are people who don’t give it any chance. They only see it as a cash grab (which it isn’t) following the success of The Avengers. Man of Steel is the victim of these people, bashing the hell out of it on the internetz. Of course, there are other people who haven’t seen too many movies this year and they just jump on the bandwagon of hate. There’s also people who mistake most disappointing movie for worst movie (not that it can’t be both). And then there are people who honestly don’t like it, and with those I’m fine with even though I completely disagree. I don’t think my “conspiracy theories” are that outrageous, it’s not the first time a movie is hated upon for no good reason (see the albeit small, still significant backlash for TDKR).

We clearly have different opininions on Man of Steel. The production design, the performances, yes those last 30 minutes, all of it is great. Product placement? Well, that’s a first. What about Superman II? Did the product placement in that offend you? It’s not a perfect movie by any means, it has its fair share of flaws but overall this is far from a terrible movie. What does the budget have to do with anything? Just because it had one of the biggest budgets it has to be one of the best movies ever made? No. It has to be an enjoyable, action-packed blockbuster with a bit more thought put into it and that in my opinion it is. But your attitude towards the people involved with the film is worrisome. Goyer can do shit. He co-wrote Batman Begins. Snyder has zero artistic potential? What does that even mean? These sort of comments are as far from the truth as they can be. They’re also a bit hateful, don’t you agree? This is what I’m getting at, this film gets a lot of undeserved hate.

  • Austin in Japan

Spring Breakers come in 2nd for best movie but wasnt even an option in any other category! What gives?

  • RockJoker

Not only that, Boris. I think relationship with parrents and child traumas, that can effect one’s mature life – is big theme of the film.

  • RockJoker

Btw, Counjuring is overrated as fuck. This film is just a kaleidoscope of old ideas. And it’s not scary at all. I know that other people find this movie pretty scary, but i don’t understand… i just… don’t undertand how that can be scary in 2013. When we all saw this kind of movie manipulations hundreds of times. Hundreds of fucking times. Yeah, may be “claps” thing was new. But it stops being scary after the very first time. I don’t know. It’s just my perception.

  • Captain Fram

Glad that “The World’s End” got best comedy. That film is so dense with detail, I’m gonna enjoy several rewatches over the next few months!

  • Sam

I enjoyed The Conjuring though it was completely derivative. Though, the “claps” thing wasn’t completely new either, as it reminded me a lot of the “1-2-3 knock” game in The Orphanage.

  • Captain Fram

Damn, that scene was tense as hell.

  • RockJoker

Yeah, thats right. I saw Orphanage after Counjuring, thats why it stayed in my memory like some kind of a new idea. But yeah, even claps wasn’t new.

  • Nick Poliskey

Man of Steel is far from the worst movie of the year, frankly the first half was quite enjoyable. After actually watching Hangover 3, no one can honestly say Man of Steel was worse than that.

Also, Worlds end being best comedy? I admit it was a really weak year for comedies, but that was the first comedy I have actually fallen asleep during in about 4 years! I really do like Pegg comedies, but much like Apatow, they tend to be too long. Worlds end was OK, but it was WAY to depressing, and I actually thought this is the end was much funnier. I actually didn’t “laugh” much at all during Worlds end. Which is really how comedies should be rated. In fact, I laughed at “We’re the Millers” at least 4 times as much as the two “end” movies combined.

  • Man of Steel was not good, but movies like Admission, Identity Thief, Gangster Squad were all worse. Then again, we knew they would be bad.

The World’s End wasn’t a bad movie, but best comedy? Not even close. It got the votes because people like the movie and it wasn’t in any other category that would give it a chance to win something.

Best comedy for me = most laughs, which would probably be Bad Grandpa.

  • Strybeck

How about best vehicle in a 2013 movie? Gotta be the bubbleship from Oblivion.

  • Tony D’Amico

It was my #1 for the year. Fucking amazing!

  • Tony D’Amico

I really didn’t like Man of Steel, but wouldn’t say it’s the worst. I went into it being a Superman hater, I have never liked the comics and the only movie that I can say is decent is the 1st Reeves film. The character is boring to me, but that’s just my opinion. I liked some aspects of the film, like when he wasn’t Superman, after that the film turned to shit for me. And Michael Shannon was not good IMO.

I understand what your saying about the DC films not getting a chance, but I think that’s because of WB failing in every venture not directed by Christopher Nolan. Also the fact that they were a few years late to the game and now their failed attempts are even more obvious and seem poorly put together. I wanted to like Man of Steel, but was let down once again by DC and WB. I just wanted it to end for the last 45 minutes.

Hangover 3, InAPPropriate Comedy, 21 & Over, I personally hated Dead Man Down. I would say that the worst of the worst was easily Now You See Me though, that was an abortion.

  • Isildur_of_Numenor

All I’m trying to say is that Man of Steel as the worst movie of the year seems ridiculous to me, and I firmly believe the movie got such a distinction thanks (in part of course) to Marvel’s success. Now that a precedent has been set, some people see it as a sort of “original” thing and they’re not willing to give anything else a chance, especially WB/DC.

I know there are people out there who genuinely don’t like the movie or aren’t interested in future projects because of previous failures (although Green Lantern was the only movie that came before MoS that was intended to be part of this new DC film universe; so not that many failures). I just have a problem with those that don’t give it a fair chance and are more than happy to bash it to death.

I liked Man of Steel a lot, but I don’t blindly love it and I know it’s not perfect (Michael Shannon was disappointing for me too, and Amy Adams’ character Lois Lane as well). But I got what I wanted from it and I’d say there’s enough in there to make someone love it. Things look promising from here on if you ask me and I’m just irritated when I see so much meaningless hate aimed at this huge project, hate that might discourage people from seeing upcoming (MoS/DC) movies. Again, for me there’s a difference between not liking a movie for solid reasons and bashing the brains out of it for no good reasons at all. That’s my problem, nothing more.

I also thought Now You See Me was awful.
