When it was first announced that Christopher Nolan’s long-time cinematographer Wally Pfister was going to be directing a movie of his own, I think we all stood up and took notice. Then we heard that it was going to be a science-fiction film involving a computer that becomes self-aware, and some of us got even more interested (well, I did, at least). Now this week we’re getting our first taste of what exactly this movie will have to offer and it’s hard not to be reminded of Spike Jonze’s Her.

Transcendence stars Johnny Depp as Dr. Will Caster, an A.I. expert working towards the goal of reaching the “singularity” (ie. the point where computers surpass human intelligence). A pair of teaser trailers set up the concept using narration from Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman respectively, unfortunately they don’t really offer much in the way of visuals, which is what most of us really want to see. I’m certainly intrigued, but I have to say that these teasers also feel more than a little ham-pfisted… am I right???
