Josh Gad to Star in Gilligan’s Island Movie

Hey, this sounds like a great idea… right? Warner Brothers have announced this week that they are officially moving forward with a big screen version of the classic ’60s sitcom Gilligan’s Island. The project was previously announced back in 2010, and then it seemed to quietly fade away… just like we all assumed it would. Alas, now they seem to have located an actor who is willing to star in this thing, which I guess means that it might actually happen after all. Josh Gad is attached to play one of the lead roles, although it’s unclear whether that will be Gilligan or The Skipper. Hit the jump for more details.
According to Deadline, Warner Brothers is setting up a Gilligan’s Island movie as a “star vessel” for Josh Gad. Gad will also co-wrote the script along with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez, who worked with him on the short-lived NBC series 1600 Penn. It would seem that the previous script written by Brad Copeland (Wild Hogs, Yogi Bear) has been tossed.
As with all projects of this type, it’s unclear if they are aiming for a self-aware parody of the original show or a “gritty” modern reboot. It seems like they are putting a lot of stock in Josh Gad, but I’m not entirely convinced that he is much of a draw as of yet. He recently played Steve Wozniak in Jobs but he’s best known for The Book of Mormon musical and also voicing the snowman in Disney’s Frozen. Are you a fan of Josh Gad and would you watch a Gilligan’s Island movie?
