Rob Cohen to Direct Road House Remake

It’s only been four years since Patrick Swayze lost his battle with pancreatic cancer, and although the man lives on in our hearts and minds, Hollywood is now seemingly on a mission to remake a good portion of his filmography. Last year MGM released their Red Dawn remake to pretty harsh reviews and we’ve also heard that remakes of Dirty Dancing and Point Break are in various stages of development. Now this week it has been announced that MGM is also in the process of setting up a remake of the ultimate tough guy film, his 1989 cult classic Road House. I’m not sure what it is about Patrick Swayze’s movies that makes them so ripe to be remade right now, but it can probably all be blamed on ’80s nostalgia. Whether you see this as an act of sacrilege or merely an attempt to introduce a classic to a new generation is a matter of perspective.
According to The Wrap, Rob Cohen (xXx, The Fast and the Furious) is attached to direct a remake of Road House for MGM. The script was written by Michael Stokes (Exit Speed), who also penned an upcoming action movie for Millennium Films called Crash Bandits, which Cohen is also on board to direct. Matt Dines will oversee the project for MGM.
The plot of the original film revolved around a bad ass bouncer who is hired to clean up a notorious roadside bar in in Jasper, Missouri called the Double Deuce. The movie is best known for (among other things) a scene where Patrick Swayze kills someone by ripping out his throat. It’s hard to imagine this movie being made today for any number of reasons, and yet, I’d love to see them try. Rob Cohen is currently coming off the box office bomb Alex Cross starring Tyler Perry and Matthew Fox. Are you interested in a Road House remake or is this crossing a line that shouldn’t be crossed?
