As expected, the sequel to The Hunger Games lit up the box office over the weekend, setting a new opening weekend record for the month of November (the previous record was $142 million, held by The Twilight Saga: New Moon). The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened to an estimated $161 million, almost $10 million more than its predecessor and just slightly more than The Dark Knight Rises, which makes it the fourth highest opening weekend of all time. Elsewhere, the success of The Hunger Games left most of the other releases starving for audiences. Thor: The Dark World dropped 61% to make $14.1 million in its third weekend, while The Best Man Holiday fell 58% in its second weekend. Delivery Man outright bombed, bringing in the lowest debut ever for a Vince Vaughn movie in wide release, while Free Birds rounded out the top 5. Next weekend, Disney’s Frozen will likely be a force to be reckoned with.
