Temple Run Movie in the Works at Warner Brothers

I can’t help but be fascinated whenever someone in Hollywood announces their intention to make a movie based on a bizarre and ill-advised property, whether it be a board game, toy line or, as the case may be, a casual iPhone game. We’ve been hearing for years now that studio execs will only make movies based on recognizable brands, but the truth is, in a lot of cases they aren’t even interested in making movies. They just want to own the rights to as many things as possible in case one of their competitors comes out with something similar. This week Warner Brothers has announced that they are planning to bring the endless runner mobile game Temple Run to the big screen. Will it actually get made? Something tells me that will depend almost entirely on the success of Sony’s upcoming Uncharted movie.
According to THR, Warner Brothers is currently in talks to acquire the rights to a Temple Run movie from developer Imangi Studios. The original game had been downloaded over 170 million times as of January and spawned a sequel in addition to a couple of Disney tie-ins, Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz. Harry Potter producer David Heyman, who also recently produced Gravity, is attached to oversee the film.
The story will revolve around “an explorer who, having stolen an idol from a temple, is chased by demonic forces.” Clearly the game is partially inspired by Indiana Jones, but something tells me that a Temple Run movie will not quite measure up to that standard. On the other hand, an entire movie shot from behind a protagonist who never stops running (Crank 3, anyone?) could be brilliant. Would you actually pay money to see a Temple Run movie?
