Marvel and Netflix Team Up for Four New Original Series Including Daredevil and Luke Cage

In the wake of the initial success of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, last month we heard reports that Marvel had begun shopping more potential TV projects around to various networks. It wasn’t just one or two new shows that they had in mind, however, it was an entire package of Marvel content that included four new series and a mini-series. Now this week they have officially announced that this massive line-up of Marvel properties has found a home with Netflix and the shows have been revealed to be based on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage leading up to a mini-series based on the superhero team The Defenders. If you weren’t yet tired of seeing the Marvel Universe on screen, you just might be by the time this is all said and done.
According to the press release, Netflix has committed to a minimum of four thirteen-episode series plus the mini-series, although it sounds like each series could easily run multiple seasons if they are successful. The stories will roll out over multiple years with the first arriving in 2015. The Agent Carter series that was previously rumoured does not appear to be a part of the deal.
At any rate, this explains what happened to the Iron Fist and Luke Cage movies that were supposedly in development a few years ago. It also hints at the possible involvement of Dr. Strange and the Hulk who have both been frequent members of The Defenders in the comics. Still, considering how lacklustre Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been thus far, I can’t help but wonder if Marvel is severely watering down their Cinematic Universe. Are you excited about seeing more Marvel characters on TV?
