Monday Morning Box Office Report: Gravity Still Has Pull, The Fifth Estate Flops

GRAVITY

Gravity crushed it once again over the weekend, taking in $31 million in its third weekend to bring its domestic total to $170 million. None of the other new releases came close, and in fact, Captain Phillips also managed to hold on to second place over the Carrie remake, which disappointed with just $17 million. That’s not a great start for the only horror movie in October, not to mention a fairly expensive one with a budget of $30 million. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 dropped to #4 while Escape Plan opened at #5 with $9.8 million. That’s a bit of an improvement on The Last Stand and Bullet to the Head, but still nowhere near The Expendables and The Expendables 2. It certainly does not bode well for Arnold and Stallone’s future. As for The Fifth Estate starring Benedict Cumberbatch, it had the worst opening this year for a movie playing in more 1,500 theaters. That’s what happens when Oscar bait just doesn’t bite.
