Charlie Hunnam Drops Out of Fifty Shades of Grey

Well that didn’t take long. Just one month after landing the coveted (?) role of Christian in the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie, it appears that Charlie Hunnam is getting cold feet. The Pacific Rim and Sons of Anarchy star has decided to bow out at the eleventh hour, leaving Universal and Focus Features in need of a new leading man before the movie starts production next month. Of course, it also means that fans are once again foaming at the mouth, demanding that Matt Bomer (White Collar) be given another shot to star opposite Dakota Johnson. No word yet on who else they might have in mind, but you can’t help wondering why Hunnam chose to drop out. The reason being given is related to scheduling, although that seems a bit sketchy. The studio released the following vague statement over the weekend:
“The filmmakers of Fifty Shades Of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
In a recent interview with EW, Hunnam admitted that the pressure from fans was “daunting.” However, he also claimed to be “taking it very seriously” stating that he intended “to explore the nature of who this character is, what motivates him.” Perhaps he realized that committing to not one but potentially a trilogy of erotic films under this kind of scrutiny was too much. On the other hand, perhaps some surly fans of Sons of Anarchy threatened him with bodily harm if he decided to take on the role. On a scale of 1 to 10, how disappointed are you by this news? Do you think he made the right decision?
