  • Sean

    Yep, pretty sure.

  • Kurt

guilty. I often confuse early Sayles and Jarmusch. Argh.

  • Kurt

No worries. I’ve got tough skin. But it is nice of you to clarify! Cheers, Bro.

  • Kurt

Seriously folks, THE CONJURING is one unfocused, poorly thought out film. It undermines its entire attempt to be scary but having fun-house-boo-jump-scares so often I lost count by the halfway point. Nothing makes any sense and everything feels done before. It’s a shit film.

  • Film Junk Fan 15

whoever edits this show and puts up these awesome time codes & details i need to give major THANKS TO!!! it really helps out when listening to a 3 hour long show.

  • Niklas

No more Kurt. The guy talks way too much and obviously has no idea what it means to be a GUEST. At least if he was entertaining it wouldn’t be so bad but he is so boring and listening to him reviewing a movie is like being lectured. He is the kind of guy who sits around the table at Thanksgiving and simply can’t let you enjoy a movie but HAS to tell you all the things wrong with it.

    You’re the worst guy, Kurt.

  • Niklas

    you’re a shit guy

  • Sean

    Easy bud

  • Just wanted to be another guy with a positive comment, I also liked you, Kurt!

  • Kurt

Other than DISNEY and THE CONJURING, I felt I was far more positive than negative. In terms of guest, well, it’s not my first time on the show, I figured I was given reign enough to poke around in the fridge a bit for food if I was hungry, so to speak.

  • piggystardust

Kurt, you had some great insights and Niklas is obviously overreacting to provoke a response. What I find to be a general problem in the film community, though, is that everyone is so eager to share their opinions they sometimes come off as not caring about anyone else’s. I can’t get a word in edgewise in many of my film classes, there’s often a small group that dominates the conversation. That’s part of the reason I like Film Junk so much, the guys are mellow and not overly assertive.

But like I said, I do enjoy your insights and the movie club podcast so I hope to see you guest again sometime.

  • Anthony Hebert

Pretty cool that my Junk Mail was read. Plus, it lead itself to the ‘porn framing device’ idea, which isn’t too bad of an idea. :-P

And for the record, I thought Kurt was a fun guest, and I always like to hear new perspectives on FilmJunk (even if they think Sunshine is better than Gravity. =P)

  • Anthony Hebert

    Wait. Steve McQueen is black?

Huh, I learn something new everyday.

  • Matt Gamble

Here’s the truth about Kurt. If you give him an inch expect 6 hours of him railing about the Metric system and American’s over inflated sense of self-worth when it comes to Prom all while mis-pronouncing the words metric and Canada. And then, when he drones on so much that you pass out from sheer exhaustion you’ll wake up to find he’s eaten everything in the fridge, he’s left a somewhat dickish note on your preferred choice of snack food (What? No Bok Choy?) and you’re missing a kidney.

  • Matt Gamble

The point being, Kurt may be a dick and some of his opinions come straight out of Room 237 but it will always be an adventure listening to that asshole.

  • Andrew James

Sunshine IS better than Gravity. Easily. Time will tell on Gravity. I think in a few months, people will start to calm down from their initial adrenaline rush and realize that the thrill ride isn’t as fascinating as good screen writing is.

  • Andrew James

The -5 down vote on your comment speaks volumes.

  • Andrew James

Your +5 up vote speaks volumes.

  • Andrew James

OK on this one I actually agree with Niklas. ;)

  • Falsk

Seriously? None of you guys know who Neil deGrasse Tyson is? He’s just “the physicist”? At least, I assume that’s who you’re referring to since he was tweeting about it. This is the same guy who pointed out the night sky/star map was inaccurate in Titanic (which Cameron later went on to fix), but that’s only because, as you said, he’s a professional and this is his field of expertise. He’s not at all a stuffy, grumpy, standoffish “this is all wrong hrmph” sort of guy, but more the awesome, amazingly brilliant guy you wish was your uncle and would teach you about space and stars and things. Love him. Not surprised he would nitpick “Gravity”, but as was also mentioned, he still liked it anyway. Just surprised no one else’s heard of him. [/Neil deGrasse Tyson rant]

  • Matt the Kiwi

Never a truer word spoken. Discovered Neil on the Daily Show and have been watching him on interviews and various you tube clips ever since. Comparisons between him and Carl Sagan have obviously been noted as he’s hosting the new Cosmos series coming out next year. Am as excited by this as any movie I’m looking forward to.

  • Matt the Kiwi

I agree that the screen writing on sunshine is significantly better but for me Gravity is the better film. I’m basing this mainly on pure enjoyment levels.

  • Gerry

I always assumed ‘the bunny’ in Sexy Beast was the devil or one of his minions. ***MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS FOR SEXY BEAST*** When it’s kicking Ben Kingsley’s coffin at the end and he goes ‘pffft’ it reinforces that he’s not impressed or scared by anyone. Best moment in Sexy Beast for me is when Ray Winstone is driving Kingsley to the airport, they’re delayed by some goats on the road and Kingsley asks why one goat is looking at him funny, with a look on his face and attitude that say he wants to get out of the car and kick the shit out of the goat.

PS, I saw All The Boys Love Mandy Lane at the cinema in the UK years ago. I thought it was garbage.

  • Sean

Yeah someone on Twitter seemed disgusted that we hadn’t heard of him either. I do remember that Titanic thing but I didn’t know his name.

  • Falsk

Haha, aww, I’m not disgusted. More so amazed that my nerdiness has gone to the next level… :X

  • Jay Cheel

Was his name actually mentioned in the discussion? At one point I was considering approaching him to be in my time machine doc but I assumed he’s too busy.

  • HeroSupreme

The really stupid thing about Disney Fast Play on DVD’s is that picking Fast Play actually makes you watch the ads (with the justification that after the ads, the movie auto starts and bypasses the main menu screen, hence “faster”) . You have to opt out of Fast Play to skip directly to the Main Menu.

  • Andrew James

I too was a little bit surprised by this. He’s all over the internet in Memes (especially reddit) and Twitter. It’s almost as if he’s the only Physicist on the planet in terms of internet nerds. He’s succeeded only by Nikola Tesla in the eyes of adoring science nerds aged 18-30.

  • Matt the Kiwi

Do it Jay – one thing he seems to love to do is talk. And if he says yes, you pop a few seconds of him into your trailer and you have nerds like me instantly feeling that your doco is validated by ‘the man’. If he tells me, in the trailer, that he’s from the future and that I saw your movie and really enjoyed it, I’d believe him and go fulfil my destiny.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

Worth a re-watch after ‘Gravity’ is ‘Mission to Mars’. While of course not as good a movie, it explores the physics of space really well and the Tim Robbins character goes through a similar scene to George Clooney’s. There’s also some ‘Prometheus’ ideas in that movie as well.

  • Kenneth Serenyi

I don’t think Clooney’s character really cared enough about Ryan to talk small talk with her. He was pretty much on temporary babysitting duty and he was more interested in entertaining the people on Earth with his stories. He used the small talk later to calm Ryan and distract her from all the chaos happening around them. It’s a method to get someone to focus.

  • I think Gravity is better, but I did revise my Letterboxed score to 4.5 from 5 the next morning after I had time to let it sink in. Amazing, but not perfect.

The other reason Gravity is better is because Sunshine is only perfect until the third act. I know it’s popular to harp on the movie for (***MINOR SPOILER***) basically turning into an OK slasher flick by the end, but it does happen, and knocks it down a notch for me.

If you hit the 15 second skip button drink every time it lands on Kurt and enjoy being dead from alcohol poisoning an hour in. Jay is the star!
