Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Could Pave the Way for a Star Wars Live Action Series

The second episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired last night on ABC, and although the ratings still have yet to be tallied, based on the big numbers for last week’s premiere it seems unlikely that the show would have faltered already. A lot of people have taken notice of the success of this series, most notably the higher-ups at Disney. In fact, rumour has it that they are now looking to bring more of their recently acquired properties to the small screen and it seems that the long-rumoured Star Wars TV series may be back in play again. We’re not talking about yet another animated show set in the Star Wars universe (although there is a new one called Star Wars Rebels coming in 2014), but rather an adult-themed live-action sci-fi drama. Hit the jump for more details.
According to insider blog Blue Sky Disney, the Mouse House is having preliminary discussions with Lucasfilm about bringing a Star Wars TV series to ABC. It’s unclear if this would be the same project that George Lucas and Rick McCallum had been developing for years under the tentative title Star Wars: Underworld, but one would hope they don’t completely throw away all that work. A few years back, Lucas himself said that over 50 scripts had already been written for the show.
They ultimately had to pull the plug because they didn’t think they could find the budget to support it, but with Disney’s deep pockets behind it, perhaps they could make it work. Then again, based on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it’s quite possible that they’ll simplify it to the point that it’s completely bland and have it revolve around a couple of nameless storm troopers. Another concern is that Disney will not allow a Star Wars TV series to be as dark as Underworld was originally envisioned to be. Still, if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. continues to bring in huge ratings, this could happen sooner rather than later. Would you like to see a Star Wars TV series or would it just be wasted on a network like ABC?
