Paranormal Activity 5 Gets a Director

Despite the confusion earlier this year regarding when the next Paranormal Activity movie would hit theatres, it appears that the franchise is now back on track. We already knew that Christopher Landon’s Latino spin-off, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, was planned for release on January 4th, 2014 and that the proper sequel, Paranormal Activity 5, would be ready in time for next Halloween (October 24th, to be exact). However, we still had no word on who would be helming the fifth film and what the story might entail. Although the plot is still being kept under wraps, it has since been confirmed that Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman will not be back this time around. Instead, Gregory Plotkin will make PA 5 his directorial debut.

According to Deadline, Gregory Plotkin has signed on to direct Paranormal Activity 5 for Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse Productions. It will be his first time in the director’s chair but he is no stranger to the Paranormal Activity franchise, having edited all of the previous films except for the original. They are apparently following the formula set out by the Saw franchise, which handed the reins over to long-time editor Kevin Greutert for the final installment.

In related news, Christopher Landon will also be breaking away from the Paranormal Activity series for his next film, a horror movie called Scouts vs. Zombies. At this point, it’s unclear how much longer the P.A. movies will keep making money for Paramount. They’re certainly cheap enough to produce, but I think people are losing interest… and releasing two more in the same year may not be a wise move. Are you looking forward to Paranormal Activity 5?
