Weekly Poll Results: Best Miyazaki Movie

pollresultsmiyazaki

The reviews for Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song The Wind Rises have been overwhelmingly positive, but at this point it’s hard to see it topping Spirited Away as his most memorable and beloved film. Spirited Away easily topped last week’s poll by taking 35% of the total votes, the only real challenge coming from Princess Mononoke with 23%. My Neighbor Totoro placed third followed by a two way tie between NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind and Howl’s Moving Castle. Miyazaki’s directorial debut The Castle of Cagliostro ended up at the bottom of the list, although I suspect it is mostly because it hasn’t been as widely seen as the others. Do you agree with these results?

1. Spirited Away — 35%
2. Princess Mononoke — 23%
3. My Neighbor Totoro — 11%
4. NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind — 8%
4. Howl’s Moving Castle — 8%
6. Kiki’s Delivery Service — 5%
7. Porco Rosso — 4%
8. Castle in the Sky — 3%
9. Ponyo — 2%
10. The Castle of Cagliostro — 1%

Welp, apparently I started with the 2 best. Why continue?

Because they’re all excellent! If you like Princess Mononoke you should check out NausicaƤ next.

More people should watch Castle in the Sky, seriously. It’s an oldie (1986) but goldie.

These polls always skew heavier towards the recent releases. But everyone should make an effort to see Miyazaki’s earlier work, particularly Nausicaa. I remember it airing on HBO in the early 80s all the time. It was called ‘Warriors of the Wind’ back then. It left quite an impression on me as a child and made my young self realize that animation can be emotionally powerful.

Why no more love for howl’s moving castle? It’s a classic with tremendous voice acting and a terrific story. In effect it’s a typical studio gibli release. Really the only animators who come close to studio gibli are pixar and even then pixar churn em out at frightening rate.
