Insidious Chapter 3 in the Works, James Wan Not Likely to Direct

For the second time in their careers, director James Wan and screenwriter Leigh Whannell have given birth to another huge horror franchise. Although Insidious has a ways to go before it will catch the Saw series, it is now looking like it will become another annual horror fixture. Insidious Chapter 2 debuted to some impressive box office numbers this past weekend, building on the success of the original. Although I haven’t seen the sequel and have no idea how it ends, it’s no surprise to hear that a third installment is now in the works. From the sounds of it, most of the original creative team will return, but strangely there is no mention of James Wan himself being involved in the next movie. Based on what he had to say in a recent interview, however, I think it’s safe to assume that he has directed his last horror movie.
According to a joint announcement from Entertainment One, FilmDistrict, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, Leigh Whannell has signed on to write the next installment in the Insidious franchise. Jason Blum will once again produce through Blumhouse Productions, along with Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity). No word yet on whether any of the cast members will return.
A director also has yet to be named, but it’s probably a safe bet that Wan will not return. In addition to being in the middle of shooting Fast & Furious 7, he recently told Moviefone that he is done with horror:
“I’m going to go on record and say I am finished with the horror genre. Conjuring and Insidious 2 are my two last scary movies… Hollywood puts you in a box. If you do a successful comedy, then you’re know as The Comedy Guy. If you do a successful car chase movie, then you become that guy. So I’m a student of cinema, so I just want to make sure I get the chance to make other kinds of films.”
You definitely can’t blame him for feeling that way, although it’s still unclear just how versatile he is. Are you disappointed that James Wan is turning his back on horror? Do you have any interest in a third Insidious film or should they have ended it after Chapter 2?
