FX Developing an American Psycho TV Series

With Dexter currently wrapping up its eighth and final season this month on Showtime, there will be no shortage of new TV shows about serial killers waiting to pick up viewers who want to continue to ride with a dark passenger. Between The Following on Fox, Bates Motel on A&E and Hannibal on NBC, there are plenty of options out there already and now this week FX is adding another one to the list. They are teaming up with Lionsgate TV for a new series based on Bret Easton Ellis book American Psycho. This won’t be a serialized remake of the movie, however; it is being developed as a sequel of sorts. As you can probably guess, Bret Easton Ellis does not appear to be involved.
According to THR, FX is developing an American Psycho TV series with former Lionsgate president of production Allison Shearmur and writer Stefan Jaworski. Jaworski is best known for the Danish crime series Those Who Kill, which is currently being remade for U.S. audiences by A&E. The story will revolve around Patrick Bateman in his 50s, who “takes on a protege, in a sadistic social experiment, who will become every bit his equal, creating the next generation American Psycho.”
The 2000 film directed by Mary Harron and starring Christian Bale drew mixed reviews but was a moderate hit. It also spawned a poorly-received direct-to-video sequel starring Mila Kunis as a criminology student who moonlights as a serial killer. Something tells me that seeing Patrick Bateman living outside of the ’80s just won’t be the same, but perhaps with the right actor it could still be compelling. Would you watch an American Psycho follow-up on the small screen?
