Don't get me wrong, I love some questionable lead characters, but this character doesn't even have the feeble motives of Walt...you got to have something for the audience to root for/identify with. How big of an audience will care about a crooked lawyer?! I mean Michael Scott was one of the worst bosses ever (bad associations for audience) but they made that work with his childlike heart - really can't rewrite Saul. It almost needs to be a broad situational comedy...

I like the idea a lot more now, that it is confirmed to be a prequel. I was worried there would be a temptation to try to tie a lot of plot and characters to breaking bad if the show took place after the series. I think that as a prequel then maybe the show can be more of its own thing.

Anyways, the final season of breaking bad is pretty good isn't it? I haven't watched a lot of final seasons of shows live as they air, but it is totally blowing Lost's final season out of the water for me.

I assume that when you say that the whole spin-off thing is "hit or miss," you are referring to recent history. Most of the shows Americans watched when I was a kid in the 70s were spin-offs, I just didn't realize it at the time. The Jeffersons, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Joanie Loves Chochy, All in the Family, and many, many others either were a spin-off, or had a spin-off.
