Better Call Saul Breaking Bad Spin-Off Greenlit at AMC

Well it’s probably not a huge surprise, but with just three episodes of Breaking Bad remaining, AMC has committed to a new TV series that will continue to give fans their fix. Better Call Saul, a proposed spin-off that revolves around Bob Odenkirk’s character Saul Goodman, has apparently been greenlit and will be getting a series order assuming that deals can be worked out with with series creator Vince Gilligan, writer-producer Peter Gould and Odenkirk himself. Gilligan first started talking about the idea back in 2012 but it wasn’t until back in July that it was actually revealed to be very close to happening. Apparently Netflix and several other networks were also interested in acquiring the spin-off, but now fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the show will be staying at AMC where it belongs.

According to Deadline, Better Call Saul will be a one-hour drama like Breaking Bad, but unlike Breaking Bad it will be less dark and have more emphasis on comedy. Chronologically speaking, it is being envisioned as a prequel that “will focus on the evolution of the Goodman character before he ever became Walter White’s lawyer.” I guess that means we still can’t presume anything about the fate of Saul in the current show.

TV spin-offs have always been hit and miss, but I’m certainly willing to give this one a shot. I like the character and I like Bob Odenkirk, I just hope they give it the opportunity to become its own thing instead of forcing appearances from other familiar characters. It sounds like the entire style and tone of the show will also need to be different, which may or may not alienate hardcore Breaking Bad fans. Are you looking forward to Better Call Saul or does this sound like a bad idea?

I assume that when you say that the whole spin-off thing is “hit or miss,” you are referring to recent history. Most of the shows Americans watched when I was a kid in the 70s were spin-offs, I just didn’t realize it at the time. The Jeffersons, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Joanie Loves Chochy, All in the Family, and many, many others either were a spin-off, or had a spin-off.

I like the idea a lot more now, that it is confirmed to be a prequel. I was worried there would be a temptation to try to tie a lot of plot and characters to breaking bad if the show took place after the series. I think that as a prequel then maybe the show can be more of its own thing.

Anyways, the final season of breaking bad is pretty good isn’t it? I haven’t watched a lot of final seasons of shows live as they air, but it is totally blowing Lost’s final season out of the water for me.

Don’t get me wrong, I love some questionable lead characters, but this character doesn’t even have the feeble motives of Walt…you got to have something for the audience to root for/identify with. How big of an audience will care about a crooked lawyer?! I mean Michael Scott was one of the worst bosses ever (bad associations for audience) but they made that work with his childlike heart – really can’t rewrite Saul. It almost needs to be a broad situational comedy…
