Leonardo DiCaprio to Produce a New Adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau

Although remakes continue to be the subject of scorn for many movie fans, the truth is that there are certain stories that actually deserve to be retold over and over again. If you ask me, many of the science-fiction works of H.G. Wells fall into this category. From The Time Machine to The Invisible Man and The War of the Worlds, these are classic tales that are always relevant and occasionally in need of repackaging for a new generation. His 1896 novel The Island of Dr. Moreau also probably belongs on this list, and indeed it has already been adapted six different times for the big screen. Now Leonardo DiCaprio is in the process of setting up yet another version of the story for Warner Brothers. Here’s to hoping it turns out a little better than the last one.
According to Deadline, Appian Way partners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson Killoran are setting up a “contemporary re-imagining” of The Island of Dr. Moreau at Warner Brothers. They have hired Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy (Hemlock Grove) to pen the script but no director is attached as of yet. Their goal is to produce “a sci-fi film with a topical ecological message.”
The story revolves around a man who is shipwrecked and stranded on an island where a mad scientist is creating human-like creatures through radical experimentation. Some of the best-known adaptations include Island of Lost Souls starring Charles Laughton and Bela Lugosi and The Island of Dr. Moreau starring Burt Lancaster and Michael York. The most recent version was directed by John Frankenheimer in 1996 and it was a critical and commercial flop. What do you think, is it time for a fresh take on The Island of Dr. Moreau?
