David Cronenberg’s Shivers to Get a Remake

shivers

Over the past decade, we’ve seen plenty of great genre directors from the ’70s and ’80s have their filmographies shamelessly mined for remakes. John Carpenter is the prime example; no fewer than four of his films have been remade since 2005 and there are at least two others currently being lined up. Now it looks like David Cronenberg’s work is about to follow a very similar path. Although none of his movies have been remade up until now, there have been new versions of Scanners, The Brood and Videodrome in development for years with Cronenberg even contemplating his own update to The Fly at one point. Now it looks like his very first feature film, Shivers (also known as They Came From Within), can also be added to the list. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Shock Till You Drop, Danish actress and director Rie Rasmussen (Human Zoo) has been tapped to direct a remake of Cronenberg’s 1975 film Shivers. The script is being written by Ian Driscoll (Smash Cut, Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter) and it will be produced by Jeff Sackman and Michael Baker (Young People Fucking). Rasmussen had this to say about the project:

“I’m Scandinavian and am very comfortable with sexual expression as a part of a healthy, modern-day reality, and I’ve always loved the underlying social messages in a well-made horror film… The opportunity to reinterpret this film from today’s point of view, adding my own female intuition and life experience was a temptation I couldn’t resist.”

The original film revolves around genetically-engineered parasites that wreak havoc in an apartment complex, turning its inhabitants into violent sex addicts. The remake will supposedly be “updated for today’s social and sexual realities” and will take place “in a post-HIV world, where people interact through screens rather than skin.” Are you interested in a remake of David Cronenberg’s Shivers?

Semi-intrigued at the idea but knowing how most remakes go, I’m not putting much hope on this. Even 10 years ago, it would seem unlikely for Hollywood to ever consider a Cronenberg remake. How times change!
