Tuesday Morning Box Office Report: One Direction Wins Boring Weekend

boxofficeonedirection

Despite the lack of intriguing options in theatres over the Labour Day weekend, box office numbers were still generally better than expected with One Direction: This is Us coming out on top with $17 million. The Butler did give the boy band documentary a run for its money, however, continuing to pull in crowds in its third weekend and ultimately falling to #2. We’re the Millers was in third place followed by Disney’s Planes, while the biggest surprise of the weekend was the Mexican comedy Instructions Not Included, which debuted at #5 despite playing on just 347 screens. Meanwhile, Getaway starring Ethan Hawke and Selene Gomez was a complete dud, opening at #9 with just $4.5 million, and the weekend’s other new release, Closed Circuit, didn’t even crack the top 10, making just $2.5 million.

Sad that the best film of the year, Wong Kar Wai’s The Grandmaster, didn’t even crack the top 10.
