    And I can’t believe Jay defended this casting. There’s a time for geekbusting and I’m usually a fan of when Jay does it, but sometimes the geeks are right.

    The way Jay worded how he feels about the inhumanity in many movies nowadays, the cold glossiness of it all was just perfection. I myself think that all the time when watching older stuff vs. modern movies – how some aspects can be weak in older movies, but the movie itself can still be great. I could just never really put my finger on why that was. Movies felt very human-made back then. They had personality. Nowadays, there is a certain sense of perfection which I think many times tends to get focused on more than the story and characters. I just think the way Jay put that idea into words was just great.

    I could care less – I got the Batman story I wanted. As long as they didn’t cast JGL or Bale I am happy.

    None of this means I’ll go see Aflleck’s Batman though.

    Re Day Of The Triffids.

    BBC did an updated mini-series in 2009 with Dougray Scott and Brian Cox than contains the most immortal line of dialog ever.

    DS plays the foremost triffid expert who has worked with them all his life and is obsessively driven in his work by the anguish of seeing his mother killed by a wild triffid when he was a boy. He blames his father (BC) in part for this who was in #his# day the foremost triffid expert. Father and son are estranged because of this but DS travels to see BC when farmed triffids escape and threaten humanity. BC greets DS with an absolutely straight face: “You’ll be here about the triffids then?” I don’t believe any irony was intended.

    ps. Jay’s rendition of Triffid sounds sounds like Hard Harry’s jack-off technique from Pump Up The Volume. Just sayin…

  • As to Jay’s point about the lack of charm in modern starbucked moviemaking, I would strongly recommend watching the films of Joe Swanberg (who is presently on the cusp of hitting it mainstream with his new film Drinking Buddies but is mostly known as one of the main mumblecore directors). A lot of his films are on Netflix, recommend in particular: Nights and Weekends, Uncle Kent, LOL, Hannah Takes the Stairs.

    I haven’t listened to the podcast yet, but I was delighted to see Day of the Triffids making an appearance on the show. My uncle was the late Howard Keel, and he is pretty much the reason I write about movies today. When I was a little kid, every time I visited my aunt and uncle I was like a kid in a candy shop when I saw all his Academy screeners. He was a member of the Academy and the first time I opened his closet and saw all those movies I knew I’d died and gone to heaven. I even named my daughter after him.

    I thought it was a really interesting and valid point about how nationally released movies are uniformly technically perfect, and that genuine technical failures like Battlefield Earth don’t get made anymore. But then I remembered the worst-made movie I’ve ever seen outside of, maybe, The Creeping Terror or After Last Season, both of which are still physically more watchable, came out in 2012 and appeared in several thousand American theaters.

    The really distressing thing is that nobody else noticed, and The Hunger Games made eighty billion dollars.

    Don’t be discouraged about us listeners’ not seeing the movies you gents review. I watch a film-a-week in a legitimate theater, sometimes two movies. More so, I rent/purchase/stream another 15 – 20 per week from home. The Film Junk reviews are my main deciding point and I discuss your opinions’ with my coworkers… I can’t be the only listener who does this.

    And, as your past Junk Mail has shown, you guys provide a service which is inexplicable and unique. Your podcast provides comfort and reassurance. It’s like visiting a particular group of awesome friends who happen to live a bit far. I am always eager to hear the latest ‘cast and have listened to select episodes two and even three times.

    I don’t know what traffic you have on your website, but you have definitely influenced me and my coworkers by proxy.

    Regarding movie length…

    Seems obvious, but only great films should extend the two-hour limit. You can become so absorbed in the characters, the visuals, and the story that you are elevated to having an “experience”. I’m thinking of Solaris (1972), A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Aguirre: The Wrath of God.

    Sometimes you have to live the characters’ struggles, their ordeals, in order to get the point of the story. Or, the metaphor is so staggeringly large, that it takes time to develop.

    Most films are scant and simply time wasters, not even deserving an 1 1/2 hours, such as, Jack & Jill, Leonard Part 6, or Catwoman. Instead of the writer of the article debasing films for being too long, he should have ravaged the reasoning behind some films getting financed at all.

    Thanks Lori. We know that people listen to the show (and we are grateful for that), but sometimes it just feels like we’re missing the mark on the stuff we are choosing to review / discuss. A lot of times people seem to be ignoring theatrical releases in favour of things that are on TV and VOD.

    Second this. Thought it was amazing… what a Sergio Leone movie would look like if he were working in 2013.

    Given the Film Junk crew’s wariness about WKW in general and Asian martial arts films in particular, I still think there’s a good chance you guys will love it, and barring that, a really good conversation is guaranteed.

    The “twist” in You’re Next is no more a twist than the one in World’s End. They both happen halfway through the movie.

    it’s all about the marketing. If the twist in you’re next was in the trailer it would just be seen as an interesting development.

    Wow another post of mine vanishes! Kon Tiki is superb, the effects of the whale going under the raft is absolutely amazing, best cgi work I’ve ever seen in a low to mid budget movie, puts a lot of Hollywood movies effects to shame. Great story, Great Effects and the cinematography is outstanding.

    Just saw You’re Next. Loved it. I think Jay had some issues with the mom in the film being too hot? She is pretty hot to be sure, but she’s also Barbara Crampton, star of such horror classics as Re-animator, Chopping Mall and From Beyond. So I’m not sure if you’d call that homage or stunt casting or what, but I’d bet her casting had more to do with that than her acting ability or looks. But man, she aged pretty darn well I must say.
