Ben Affleck is the New Batman

I don’t think I’m alone in saying that when I first read this headline, I thought it was a joke. The news is unexpected to say the least, but in a way, it kind of makes sense. Ever since it was announced that Batman would be involved in the upcoming Man of Steel sequel, we’ve been hearing all kinds of speculation about who might play The Dark Knight. Everyone from Christian Bale to Ryan Gosling to Teen Wolf star Tyler Hoechlin have been rumoured, but the answer was under our noses all along. Ben Affleck was once thought to be Warner Brothers’ top choice to direct a Justice League movie, but now it seems that their meetings may have been about something entirely different. He will indeed be replacing Christian Bale as the new Batman. Here’s what director Zack Snyder had to say about the announcement:

“Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry’s Superman. He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can’t wait to work with him.”

It would seem that the rumours of Warner Brothers pursuing an older Batman were actually true, although “older” in this case is the tender age of 41. This also continues the Warner Brothers trend of casting actors who have already played a superhero once before (ie. Ryan Reynolds). However, while many people were excited about Affleck directing a superhero movie, I don’t know that memories of Daredevil will necessarily make people confident in his ability to play another superhero. What do you think, is Ben Affleck a good choice to play Batman or is Warner Brothers dropping the ball yet again?

When I heard the news I was kind of stunned…in fact I am still stunned. Unbelievable! I can’t accept it…I’m just flabbergasted…why didn’t the just go with an unknown guy? Or like a relatively unknown like Henry Cavill?

Why does WB always cast a person that physically goes against the type portrayed in the comics? They always cast someone who matches the superman comic…so why not Batman?? I did like Bale and even Keaton but the physicality of the character in the comics is huge…6’2″ – 6’4″ weighing in at 210-220 depending on the origin. But overall Batman is big! Can’t they cast that???

I think Affleck has always been an average actor…He’s so much more talented behind the screen. He doesn’t have the charisma or star quality like Clooney or even Keaton back in his height did. I just can’t see it. I think if they go this route there’s big chance this could be a flop before launch….This is definitely going to be extremely divisive!

OH and clooney was a horrible Batman!!! So I know he sucked…don’t know why I brought him up…Though I have great respect for his work as both actor and director…with Batman being a big EXCEPTION of course.

Oh have WB the execs seen DareDevil??? Granted the movie was horrible but Ben was not DD…at least not the one Frank Miller created in the comics…Affleck does not brood well.

It’s kinda funny hearing this news. I always pictured them using Afflect to play Superman, considering the fact that he once played George Reeves, dawning the Superman cape; in Hollywoodland. I don’t think he’s such a bad actor. Dare Devil was pretty whack, but I don’t remember Ben Affleck being the reason why it sucked. I’m willing to give him a chance. Also, I’ve never known them to use a no name actor to play Batman… they only seem to do that with Superman. I guess maybe it has to do with the fact that the Bruce Wayne character is almost like a celebrity, which could be why they choose well known “movie stars”. Afflect is only 2 inches taller than the “comic” Batman, so I suppose that’s a plus. Maybe he might be able to unofficially help with Goyers script writing. lol

TOM HARDY should play Batman!!! We didn’t see his face anyways in Dark Knight Rises as Bane! I think ? Correct me if I’m wrong, only saw it once in the theater.

Good for Ben, and after the at the time second line Marvel Daredevil he can now show his acting skills at the DC Big Name Bruce Wayne. That it is in a “Superman vs Batman” or “Superman and Batman” means he will not get the main role: Good for Ben. Hope will get as a “reward” the directors job for Justice League.

This is great news, I hope this sucks so bad that it destroys all comic book franchises.

  • Ripplesdip

Well everyone freaked out when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker. There were serious petitions sent to studios to get Daniel Craig removed from Bond, so I’m going to wait and see. Good luck to him…

  • Jason Black

Sounds like a good choice to me. But a Superman v Batman movie is a bad idea.

  • darksiders

Can Affleck portray the darkness in Batman? The turmoil he goes through ever single day and in every single comic book?

    Answer: No.

This will probably be a re-imagining of the character to fit who Affleck is and how he acts. Probably focus more on the handsome playboy aspect. Maybe bring back the grey and blue suit?

Please just no close ups of butt shots and nipple shots.

Why the fuck do most people that go “Oh my God, but Daredevil!” talk like Affleck hasn’t done a film since 2003? He had a bad couple of years between his movies that WEREN’T Daredevil being bombs and the Jennifer Lopez crap, but he recovered, regrouped, and has made and been in some incredible stuff in the last decade, but people like to talk like it’s impossible for someone to actually get better at something. It’s like a fuckin’ broken record.

  • Loren

@ripplesdip:disqus I agree with what you say 100%. This movie is gonna make big $$$$ for the studios! Weeeeeeeeee!!! They know what they’re doing.. they ran the numbers.

  • BatmanisfromBoston

Heath Ledger was an excellent method actor. Affleck plays himself. The Ledger hate had more to do with Breakback homophobia than his acting skills. This movie is gonna bomb.

  • Karnidge

    Affleck is 6′ 4″

  • Mrespony

There may be a bit of studio politics at play here and that’s not necessarily bad. http://www.thewrap.com/movies/column-post/ben-afflecks-batman-casting-cements-wb-relationship-despite-jeff-robinov-exit-112821

  • rusinchicago

Wasn’t he already Batman? the one with bitch tits….no wait, Im thinking of him in Gigli…confusing that with the nipples in Schumacher’s Batman and Robin…hehe

  • rusinchicago

not to mention using Clooney as your acting standard, esp. from the his “head tilt” period…

  • 1138sw

He’s listed at 6″ 4″ on google but there is no way the guy is 6′ 4″…http://www.celebheights.com/s/Ben-Affleck-454.html…most people think anywhere between 6 0-6 2 but ben nowhere near towers over people in movies. Hensworth is an actor who is 6′ 4″ and he looks it!

  • As if this is a deal breaker? You don’t think they can make a character feel more physically intimidating without him being the exact height? Elijah Wood wasn’t 4 ft but they worked with it
