Three Competing Lance Armstrong Biopics Now in Development

After Lance Armstrong finally admitted to using performance enhancing drugs earlier this year, it was no surprise to hear that a movie about the disgraced cyclist’s life story was being put into development. Fast-forward to eight months later, however, and we’ve got an absolute feeding frenzy going on in Hollywood. There are now three different Lance Armstrong biopics currently in the works along with at least one documentary as well (Alex Gibney’s The Armstrong Lie, which is premiering at TIFF next month). This week Bradley Cooper has attached himself to one of the projects, which will definitely help give it some traction. But do we really need three different takes on the story? Hit the jump for a breakdown of the various Lance Armstrong movies and who is involved in each one.
According to Deadline, Bradley Cooper is currently in talks to produce and star in Red Blooded American, the Lance Armstrong biopic being set up at Warner Brothers with Jay Roach (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, The Campaign) in the director’s chair. It’s not yet clear if Cooper will play Armstrong or his former teammate Tyler Hamilton, the man who eventually blew the whistle on Armstrong’s shenanigans. The script is being written by Scott Z. Burns (Contagion).
Ironically, rumour has it that Bradley Cooper was previously approached to star in one of the other Lance Armstrong movies as well. Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams had him in mind to star in their movie, which is based on the book Cycle Of Lies: The Fall Of Lance Armstrong by Juliet Macur. Then there is the third project, which is currently being fast-tracked at Working Title Films with Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity) set to direct from a script by John Hodge (Trainspotting). Ben Foster will play Armstrong in that one.
Clearly, it’s going to be a tight race to see who can get their Lance Armstrong movie across the finish line first. I’d be pretty surprised if all three actually end up getting made, but it does seem like there is still a lot of interest in the subject matter. What do you think? Are you interested in seeing a Lance Armstrong biopic? Which one seems the most promising to you?
