Captain Phillips Trailer #2

captainphillips

Here’s a new trailer for Paul Greengrass’s upcoming movie Captain Phillips, based on the true story of the MV Maersk Alabama, a U.S. cargo ship that was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009. The movie stars Tom Hanks as Capt. Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage for four days resulting in a standoff between the pirates and the U.S. Navy. It looks to be another tense thriller from Greengrass, although as this trailer reveals, the relationship between Phillips and the pirate leader is also a key part of the story. Captain Phillips hits theatres on Oct. 11th; check out the new trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Glad to see the Somali’s aren’t just mindless ‘baddies’. Looks like things could get quite tender in the lifeboat scene. “I want you to draw me wearing this, Captain Philips. Only this.”

Feel exactly the opposite… have zero interest seeing any justification of the pirate’s actions. This trailer is actually selling me off seeing the movie.

I’m guessing you have no desire in seeing the backstory to why Matt Damons character tries to get to Elysium either? Just because it shows the pirates justifications doesn’t mean you have to agree with them but it does make for a more rounded movie.

Not just mindless baddies. But baddies, still. And Americans are still the good guys.

    Nice, eh?

  • justin

There are no justifications for illegal
    actions. But there are grievances.

See the difference? Not everything is black and white you know.

Besides, if that’s the way you think, you should steer away from any Hollywood film involving US forces fighting foreign countries with faked “justifictions”, where the other part are always evil, cruel and simple-minded.

  • Matt the Kiwi

I dunno man, I’m hoping that this film shows that it’s actually more complicated than that. Otherwise what’s the point right? Throw Tom Hanks in a boat with a bunch of ‘bad-guy pirates’ and it could get pretty boring…especially when we all already know the ending. But put Hanks together with someone whose just trying to figure out a way to stop his family / countrymen starving and you have a good reason for telling this story.
Don’t have much sympathy for these pirates but I do wonder what I would do if I was in their situation.
And Chris Rock as the pirate captain is an inspired piece of casting :-)

Maybe if the film makers changed the nationality of the Somalians to American pirates, would you all get on your righteous pedestals and say that it’s not a true betrayal of the story, like the same people did at THE IMPOSSIBLE!
