Antonio Banderas Added to The Expendables 3, Mel Gibson Also Confirmed

We’ve had a flurry of developments related to The Expendables 3 over the past week with Sylvester Stallone recently announcing a few new casting changes / additions via Twitter. Last Tuesday he revealed that Harrison Ford had joined the all-star cast while Bruce Willis had dropped out. He also called Bruce Willis “greedy and lazy” and The Hollywood Reporter later offered up additional details stating that Willis had demanded a million dollars a day to appear in the film. Now it appears that some of that unused Bruce Willis money is being spread around further, allowing Antonio Banderas to sign on as well. Mel Gibson has also been confirmed as the villain of the film.
According to EW, Stallone had nothing but nice things to say about Banderas, calling him “a consummate actor and a gentleman.” Stallone and Banderas previously worked together on the 1995 Richard Donner film Assassins. There has been no word yet on what Banderas’ role might be, but just like Mel Gibson, Banderas is also appearing in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills, which further blurs the line between these two action franchises.
The interesting thing about The Expendables 3 cast is that it seems to be veering more towards actors who have more raw acting talent and less physical prowess. While that could elevate the next installment, it also might mean that the action scenes will be less intense. How do you feel about the latest Expendables 3 casting announcements?
