Tuesday Morning Box Office Report: 2 Guns Shoots Down The Smurfs 2

The lack of major blockbusters this past weekend kept multiplexes fairly quiet as 2 Guns came out on top with a mediocre $27 million. That’s essentially equivalent to Contraband, Mark Wahlberg’s previous collaboration with Baltasar Kormakur, which is a disappointment considering Denzel Washington’s involvement (Safe House opened to $40 million last February). The lack of a compelling premise or catchy title likely kept 2 Guns from standing out among the other summer movies. The Wolverine dropped to second place with $21 million, while The Smurfs 2 tanked with just $17.5 million, proving that not every family film is just blindly accepted when there is strong competition. The Conjuring and Despicable Me 2 rounded out the top 5. Expect things to pick up again next weekend with four new movies in wide release hitting theatres.
1. 2 Guns — $27.1M
2. The Wolverine — $21.3M
3. The Smurfs 2 — $17.5M
4. The Conjuring — $13M
5. Despicable Me 2 — $10.1M
6. Grown Ups 2 — $7.95M
7. Turbo — $6.23M
8. Red 2 — $5.56M
9. The Heat — $4.62M
10. Pacific Rim — $4.49M
