The Bourne Legacy Sequel in the Works, Jeremy Renner to Return

After Matt Damon refused to do another Bourne movie without Paul Greengrass, Universal went ahead with a bold plan to expand the franchise beyond Jason Bourne. The Bourne Legacy focused on Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross, another agent from a similar top secret program designed to create superhuman assassins. The movie was a moderate success although it wasn’t well-received by critics and seems to have been quickly forgotten by fans. Nevertheless, Universal is now pushing forward with another Bourne sequel and it sounds like Matt Damon will sit this one out as as well. Hit the jump for more details.

According to Deadline, Universal Pictures has hired Anthony Peckham to pen the script for a sequel to The Bourne Legacy. The movie will once again focus on Aaron Cross with Jeremy Renner expected to return for the lead role. Frank Marshall will continue as producer along with Ben Smith and Jeffrey Weiner.

Peckham’s writing credits include Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and the Clint Eastwood movie Invictus, plus the 2001 Michael Douglas thriller Don’t Say a Word. At the moment, it is still unclear if Tony Gilroy will assist in the writing or return to the director’s chair. He has been the one consistent presence throughout all of the Bourne films up until now and a lack of involvement from him could potentially be worrisome. Still, the real question here is whether or not fans will be on board with another Bourne movie that does not feature Jason Bourne. What do you think? Are you interested in a sequel to The Bourne Legacy?
