Love her or hate her, it was probably inevitable that Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody would eventually get to direct her own movie. However, I certainly didn’t expect her directorial debut to look quite so tame. The movie stars Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages) as a young woman from a small conservative town in Montana who is inspired to let loose and party in Las Vegas after a near-fatal accident. Based on that premise, you’d this would be a dark R-rated comedy, but the trailer says otherwise.
Paradise (previously titled Lamb of God) also stars Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer, Holly Hunter and a bald Nick Offerman, but it does not seem particularly edgy or funny. Maybe it’s going for something different, but there’s also the fact that it will be premiering on DirecTV, which could also be a bad sign. Either way, I’m still somewhat curious to see what Diablo Cody can do on her own. Paradise premieres on DirecTV on Aug. 8th before hitting select theatres on Oct. 18th; check out the trailer after the jump and see what you think.
