Monday Morning Box Office Report: The Wolverine Claws Its Way to the Top

As expected, James Mangold’s The Wolverine hacked its competition to pieces over the weekend, but the box office numbers were not quite as strong as some had predicted. $55 million is a far cry from the $85 million opening of X-Men Origins: Wolverine back in 2009 (not to mention this year’s other big comic book movies), although it’s almost exactly on par with X-Men: First Class. It feels like the popularity of the X-Men could be waning a bit, although the lack of any other big name actors or characters probably also held this one back. The Conjuring came in second with $22 million (a respectable drop from its debut), while Despicable Me 2, Turbo and Grown Ups 2 rounded out the top 5. Elsewhere, Fruitvale Station managed to sneak into the top 10 with its nationwide expansion, while Woody Allen put up the best per-theatre average of his career with Blue Jasmine.
