Wings Trailer: A Hilarious Low Budget Knockoff of Disney’s Planes

wings

If you thought Disney’s upcoming animated Cars spin-off Planes seemed almost like a Pixar parody, here’s another layer of irony to add to the mix. Lionsgate is putting out their own direct-to-DVD knockoff of Planes called Wings and it pushes the envelope even further in terms of just how cheap and generic it looks. Clearly The Asylum are not the only ones who know how to play the mockbuster game.

Like many of the other animated doppelgangers that exist out there (ie. Brave rip-off Kiara the Brave), the movie appears to have been produced overseas (in Russia, specifically). However, the surprising thing is that it actually boasts some recognizable Hollywood voice actors including Josh Duhamel, Hillary Duff and, yep, Rob Schneider. Seriously, are we sure this isn’t a parody? Wings will be available exclusively at Walmart and Redbox on Aug. 6th; marvel at the wonderfully nuanced trailer after the jump.

If ever there were grounds for a lawsuit

Farting planes, the kids will love it!

I love me some Pixar, but just like Toy Story is bordering on being a rip-off of The Christmas Toy (1986, Jim Henson), Cars and Planes are hardly original ideas from Pixar. There have been many cartoons featuring anthropomorphised vehicles: Pedro (1942, Disney), Streamlined Greta Green (1937, WB), Susie the Little Blue Coupe (1952, Disney), the list goes on.

  • Yes, but while those are taking an idea, this is clearly taking the aesthetic, story beats, and even the same font, and banking on people accidentally buying it.

I agree. And when Pixar (with Toy Story) and Disney (with The Lion King – Kimba the White Lion) have come close to doing the same thing, at least their version was better in every aspect.

I want to make a knockoff of Wings called Ailerons.

Wings was released at a film festival before planes was ever released. June of 2012.

yup hubby bought it i had to pull up pixar,s website to prove it was not the same movie the kids were waiting on still going to buy planes when it comes out i was just aggravated how can you not tell the difference in animation styles??

Wasn’t Wings released in 2012? How is that a rip off?

Worst thing is when you select “Planes” on redbox and out spits “Wings”… What a disappointment!!

  • They stole Disney’s idea. Just because a movie is released before another doesn’t make the first original. Disney had Planes planned for a long time, while this studio just slapped it together.

  • It’s still a knock off, do you even know how long Disney had Planes planned? I don’t care when Wings came out, anyone who can’t see this is a rip off is an idiot.

Pretty obvious when one looks at the production cast (Russian names), Russian style construction of the sets in the animation that truly imitate real life, Russian aircraft (MiG 29, a WW2 Yak-9 like the American F4F “Skipper” of “Planes,” all with red Russian stars on the wings and fuselage), Russian wheeled armored personnel carrier (BTR-60), etc, etc, etc….definitely a cut rate production intended to ride the coattails of a Pixar release.

I hate Wings so much, it’s a also a cheep mockbuster of Planes, just like Adventures of Petey and Friends and Planes With Brains, with matt, dull and bland animation, bad character models and awful voice acting, it also looks like Spark Plug Entertainment or The Asylum animation to me.
