Batman to Appear in Man of Steel Sequel

The movie blogosphere was chock full of Comic Con coverage over the weekend as all of the various panels went down in San Diego, but aside from getting some second-hand descriptions of a few trailers and celebrity appearances, there wasn’t a whole lot to get excited about. The one big announcement came from Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures, who laid out their plans for the next Superman film with a pretty interesting twist. Zack Snyder announced that a Man of Steel sequel was in the works and that it would include Batman. It’s still unclear how extensive The Dark Knight’s involvement will be in the movie, but it seems certain that Christian Bale will not be returning to play the role. David S. Goyer is writing the script, while Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas will executive produce. Here’s what Snyder had to say about the announcement:
“I’m so excited to begin working again with Henry Cavill in the world we created, and I can’t wait to expand the DC Universe in this next chapter. Let’s face it, it’s beyond mythological to have Superman and our new Batman facing off, since they are the greatest Super Heroes in the world.”
The announcement was made with the help of actor Harry Lennix, who played General Swanwick in Man of Steel. He recited a passage from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, which Snyder says won’t be source material for the movie, but will “help them in the story they’re telling”… whatever that means. Could this really end up being the Batman vs. Superman movie that Warner Brothers has been trying to get off the ground for the past decade?
Either way, we know that this is a building block to the Justice League movie, and it’s an interesting way to up the ante for the Man of Steel sequel. Prior to the panel, THR reported that Warner Brothers was planning The Flash for 2016 and the Justice League movie for 2017. Nothing official was announced about either of those projects, however. Are you excited about a Superman / Batman crossover on the big screen? Does this mean that Warner Brothers and DC Comics are finally starting to compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
